The Buckley School in the City of New York has a grand tradition of excellence in athletics. As part of our belief that boys should be full participants in the elementary education experience, athletics are a core part of our curriculum.
Every boy in Classes I-IX plays three seasons of sports. We teach fundamental athletic skills in the Lower School and field competitive teams in the Upper School, but the focus of the program is on building young men who value physical fitness and healthy living and who are model teammates and sportsmen.
The Buckley School is looking for an energetic, sports knowledgeable, and responsible part-time coach to join a child-centered athletic department. Depending on the day of the week and the season, the day could start between 11 AM - 12 noon and a typical day ends between 4 -5 PM depending on the sport and age group assigned.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Educates individuals, groups, or teams on the rules, strategies, and techniques for a sport or sports.
- Helps to plan, organize, and lead practice sessions.
- Trains, encourages, and motivates athletes to prepare them for games and competitive events.
- Evaluates team members to determine fitness levels and potential and assigns positions or roles to athletes based on strengths and weaknesses
- Teaches safety rules and regulations and ensures they are enforced.
- Ensures athletes are using equipment properly and safely.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent leadership and motivational skills.
- Knowledge of the assigned sport; preferably one per season.
- Ability to work with student athletes.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; pursuing degree in physical education or sport/fitness management is a plus
- Experience as an athletic coach and working with children
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to traverse various athletic grounds and facilities.
- Prolonged periods of standing or walking.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time.
