Kamehameha Schools (KS) Kapalama is one of three (3) campuses in our K-12 education system and home to 3,192 students and 600 faculty and staff. Standing on 600 acres in Honolulu. We are seeking a Director of Tennis to support our Athletics program. This position will be responsible for creating a Kindergarten through High School Tennis program that will take place before, during and after school hours; and also partner with USTA in creating or supporting an independent Tennis club program on campus. The ideal candidate should also have the ability to work with various internal and external stakeholders, have excellent manager and leadership skills, and have professional verbal and written communication.
This position will work Monday through Friday with flexibility to best support our program, weekend work may be required.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Athletic Director, responsible for developing, coordinating, and supervising all Kamehameha Schools’ tennis programs, personnel, and facilities in a manner that makes tennis enjoyable, educational, and challenging, with the goal of developing competitive tennis players who exemplify good sportsmanship consistent with KS’ values.
Essential Responsibilities
Program Development
- Develop and implement an overall vision for the tennis program.
- Enthusiastically encourage and promote tennis participation at KS by planning and coordinating events such as tournaments and clinics to promote tennis and fellowship, including events in which KS tennis alumni may participate.
- Manage, coordinate and schedule use of the tennis courts efficiently to accommodate ILH team practices and matches, JTT practices and matches, lessons, clinics and free play, and maximize use of the courts on weekdays and weekends.
- Publish, distribute and communicate the tennis court schedule and update the court schedule as needed.
- Develop and enforce rules governing the use of the facilities and equipment (e.g., who may use the facilities, priority of use, reserving courts, scheduling, etc.) and expectations for coaches and staff.
- Work with the after school office/summer school office on schedule/fees and program descriptions for website and registration.
- Maintain tennis facility and suggest and assist in implementing improvements to the facility.
- Order new equipment and coordinate repairs as needed.
Coaching and Management
- Oversee all tennis play.
- Provide competent tennis instruction for all groups and levels of players.
- Coach at least one ILH boys’ and/or ILH girls’ team per year, preferably at the Varsity level.
- Supervise and oversee all KS teaching pros and coaches in the development of clinics, camps, and programs to develop tournament-level players through consistent and high-quality play.
- Develop, coordinate, and assist with Kamehameha’s hiring of appropriate staff for various tennis programs, including K-6 after-school, summer school, and Junior Team tennis.
- Be aware of tournament players, regularly attend higher level USTA tournaments.
- Assist Head Coaches in organizing and coordinating tennis team trips to the mainland and neighbor islands.
- Support Head Coaches and players at the ILH Post Season and HHSAA State Tournaments.
Minimum Qualifications - A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements listed.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
- 3 years as a Head Tennis Professional or Tennis Director
- Minimum of USPTA Pro 1 rating, 4.5+ playing ability.
- USPTA continuing education.
- Extensive private lesson/team experience.
- Substantial knowledge of the educational, developmental, and technical aspects of tennis as validated by the development of comprehensive practice plans and an overall vision for the Kamehameha tennis program.
- Ability to clearly communicate expectations of student athletes and coaches on and off the court.
- Knowledge of effective and age-appropriate teaching/coaching methods, including conditioning and cross-training methods, motivational strategies, risk management practices, and understanding of the developmental needs of children from grades K-12.
- Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills and the ability to successfully manage a cohesive, collaborative coaching staff.
- Ability to effectively interact and communicate with ADs, coaches, players and parents.
- Ability to promote cooperation and commitment amongst all coaches, players and parents.
- Ability to moderate and resolve conflicts in an empathetic, fair and clear manner.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
- Ability to work independently but also to collaborate effectively with others.
- Ability to make decisions and solve problems.
- Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
- Must be able to travel to offsite locations on island and within the state as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Professional Tennis Management.
- Sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Christian values.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Occasionally write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh at least 50 pounds.
- Frequently walk, stand, twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
