Hannah Senesh Community Day School, a progressive, independent K-8 Jewish school in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, is hiring a Lower School Learning Specialist to begin late August 2023. Key responsibilities of this role are to provide students with 1:1 and small group push-in and pull-out instruction. The Lower School Learning Specialist is a member of the Student Support team and reports to the Lower School Director. Competitive salary and benefits; $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience. Responsibilities:
- Support the academic/social/emotional development of lower school students in kindergarten-fourth grade
- Provide direct instruction for students to establish foundational skills or extend learning in small groups or 1:1 formats, through push-in and pull-out instruction, as appropriate
- Monitor and document student progress, and play an essential role in communicating needs, services, and accommodations to faculty, families, and administration
- Read and interpret educational and cognitive testing; synthesize information and provide a summary for teachers and administration; support teachers to implement the recommended strategies, classroom modifications, and testing accommodations
- Collaborate with the Student Support Team to ensure consistency and cohesion throughout the program
- Attend bi-weekly grade-level child-study meetings to provide teachers with guidance in curriculum and instruction
- Coordinate in-school student services (SETSS, Occupational Therapy, and Speech and Language) and serve as a liaison to external service providers
- Coordinate school-based standardized testing for students with approved accommodations
- Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the administration
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Special Education, Reading, and Literacy, or a similar discipline
- 5+ years of experience in education and/or learning services at the elementary level
- Training and experience teaching a systematic, explicit phonics program (e.g Fundations, PAF)
- Experience with Judith Hochman’s Writing Revolution preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional pedagogy, learning services, and an understanding of the development needs of lower school students
- Demonstrated success working with faculty to identify instructional needs to enable/enhance student learning
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and creative problem solver
- Commitment to excellence and ability to work both independently and in a collaborative environment
- Demonstrates cultural competency and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and belonging
