Middle School and Upper School Teacher of Chinese
Hackley School
Hackley School seeks a dynamic, experienced and dedicated full-time Middle/Upper School Teacher of Chinese for the 2023-2024 school year. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in modern language learning. Fluency in Chinese, experience teaching Chinese, and ease with appropriate pedagogical approaches for teaching modern languages to middle and upper school students is a must. The ability to teach French or Spanish at the middle school level is also desirable.
Candidates should have an abiding interest in the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students; be willing to work collaboratively with the Modern Languages Department and the broader faculty community; and be interested in contributing to the extracurricular life at Hackley (which could include coaching, club advising, etc.).
Reporting Structure
The Middle and Upper School Teacher of Chinese reports to the Chair of Hackley’s Modern Languages Department as well as to the Director of the Middle School and Director of the Upper School.
Specific Responsibilities include:
- Responsibilities associated with that of a subject area teacher including lesson planning, development and assignment of student learning activities, student assessment, record keeping, grading, and grade reporting
- Creation of a warm and engaging classroom environment
- Active, positive, and professional participation in all faculty meetings
- Effective communication with parents, department chair, and administration
- Participation and support for the growth of the department’s instructional program
- A teaching load based on faculty strengths and department need
- Other division-based responsibilities, such as advising students, as assigned by the division director
Necessary Skills:
- The ability to conduct classes in the target language and provide ample opportunities for students to communicate in Chinese through listening, reading, speaking, and writing
- Extensive knowledge of developmentally appropriate educational programs and instruction; plan and implement curriculum, and differentiate instruction to middle and upper school students
Qualifications:
- Native or near-native proficiency in Chinese
- Experience teaching proficiency-oriented Chinese courses for beginning, intermediate, and advanced level students, including AP Chinese
- BS in a field related to modern languages; MA or MS preferred
- Prior teaching experience preferred
Salary and Benefits:
Compensation and benefits for this 9-month faculty position are competitive, based on qualifications and experience, and may include housing and tuition remission.
