SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The controller is responsible for is responsible for the management of the components of the financial systems at the school. This includes financial reporting along with oversight of all accounting transactions in the general ledger including tuition revenue tracking and posting, oversight of posting of expenses, and endowment and investment related transactions.

The controller will oversee the details of the accounting function including preparation of the quarterly financial reports and review and analysis of monthly budget reporting. Ad hoc reporting for special projects is required and includes the ability for report creation in partnership with the CFOO for Finance Committee and Board meetings and initiatives. This includes assisting with work on the ten-year capital budgets and long-term financial models.

The controller will supervise the accounting, accounts payable, and receivables functions and will communicate effectively with all constituencies, including parents/guardians, faculty, staff, and students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND KEY OBJECTIVES

• Responsible for the accounting functions at the school including oversight of the proper recording of all revenue, expenses, endowment reporting and the oversight of the receivables and payables functions.
• Lead the annual financial audit including oversight of the completion of client-required items in advance of fieldwork each year.
• Completion of the annual Form 990, Form 5500, Town filings, and other statutory filings with the help of the outside tax accounting firm.
• Prepare journal entries for various areas including creation and posting of payroll journal entries and review of all other entries posted by the accountant.
• Approve and process gift entries sent to the system from the advancement office team each week.
• Supervise the accounting, A/P and A/R functions in the business office including oversight of the related functions such as bank reconciliations, endowment valuation reporting, budget reporting, and capital asset tracking.
• Review of the weekly payables disbursements and signing of check disbursements weekly.
• Coordinate the annual student medical insurance process as well as the tuition insurance process annually each fall.
• Assist with updates and creation of business office policies and procedures.
• Communicate with families regarding any questions related to the tuition management function as needed.
• Assist the CFOO in reporting on debt service details along with related debt covenants for the school’s bank.
• Preparation of various association surveys annually.
• Maintain current knowledge of industry best practices, and recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to introduce continual improvements to the programs, position, and duties.
• Perform other incidental and related duties as required.

 QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have:

• A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
• A minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience, not-for-profit accounting and independent school experience preferred.
• An independent and creative problem-solving mindset.
• The ability to understand the full scope of projects while seeing individual tasks through to completion.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Suite applications.
• Demonstrated time management skills.
• Creative ability, a positive outlook, and a sense of humor.
• A high level of integrity and a strong work ethic.
• Successful completion of a criminal records background check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• The ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.
• The ability to travel throughout the campus as needed.
