Long-term Substitute Middle School Mandarin Chinese Teacher
Westtown School is seeking a Long-term Substitute Teacher for Middle School Mandarin Chinese to begin in late October 2023 for approximately 3 months. The successful candidate will be fluent in Chinese, be familiar with educational technologies, and will have experience with and a passion for teaching in the target language. The Middle School Chinese program serves as an entry point for new language learners. Teaching assignments will include 6th-grade Intro to Chinese, Middle School Chinese 1, Middle School Chinese 2, and Upper School Chinese 2.
The Long-term Substitute Chinese teacher serves as a member of the 7th-grade team. Responsibilities include supervision of study halls and recesses, chaperoning field trips, and related activities that contribute to the Middle School community and the educational experience of our students. The successful candidate will be a motivated educator with strong content knowledge and a keen interest in working with Middle School students.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Actively involves students in the classroom through group work, project-based learning, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques;

Interest in 21st-century pedagogy, integrated performance assessment, and continued professional growth are essential;

Supervise/facilitate divisional duties (e.g., study hall, recess, lunch, arrival/dismissal);

Integrates technology seamlessly into teaching strategies and practices;

Enthusiastically seeks out and participates in both school-sponsored and self-selected professional development opportunities to grow as an instructional leader;

Communicates effectively with all constituents – colleagues, administrators, parents, and students.
Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Chinese or a related subject is required; an advanced degree is preferred;

Is either a native speaker or has complete fluency in Mandarin Chinese;

A minimum of 1-3 years of relevant classroom teaching experience with the ability to teach all levels of Chinese;

A strong character with a team-oriented spirit, and the ability to connect meaningfully with students throughout our diverse community;
