The Blake School seeks a part-time Middle School orchestra teacher from Jan. 2 through May 31, 2024, to cover a faculty sabbatical. This professional will lead two string ensembles (intermediate and advanced) with the support of section coaches for small group instruction. Each ensemble meets 2-3 times per week in 70-minute classes to practice repertoire for performances including: the Orchestra Ensemble Festival Day with Lower School and Upper School students (February); the MS Strings Solo Festival (March); and the Spring Orchestra Concert (May). Concert repertoire will be selected by the candidate. For candidates with a proven record of successful orchestra and band teaching, this position may be combined with Middle School band to make a 1.0 interim position for the second semester of the 2023-24 school year.
Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes a community strong and empowers students to engage across differences.
The search committee will begin reviewing applications on Oct. 13.
Required Experience:
The successful candidate will be an actively practicing musician, with significant conducting experience, effective rehearsal skills, and proven competency to teach violin, viola, cello and bass. Also essential is the ability to select and arrange age-appropriate and globally competent repertoire, tailored to match each ensemble’s unique skill set. Candidates must enjoy working with middle grades learners and value collaboration with section coaches and department colleagues.
