New Canaan Country School is a co-ed, independent day school for students in Pre-K (ages 3 & 4) through Grade 9 living in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. Located in New Canaan, CT, and serving 550 students, our mission is to guide students to reach their intellectual, creative, moral, and physical potential. A talented and devoted faculty engages our students in developmentally appropriate ways, delivering a challenging curriculum that builds intellectual skills and fosters creative and critical thinking. The Upper School at NCCS serves students in Grades 7 through 9 and provides them with the opportunity to acquire habits of mind and dispositions including collaboration, analytical and critical thinking, communication, perseverance and risk-taking. The school is now searching for a leave replacement Grades 8-9 Science Teacher to join its faculty from December 2023 through the end of the school year in June 2024; this person will also serve as an advisor.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize and implement Grade 8 and 9 science curriculum
• Serve as an advisor; develop positive relationships with students and their parents
• Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare narrative reports and conduct parent conferences
• Identify student needs and work with other professionals on staff in assessing and helping students solve health, behavioral and learning challenges
• Participate productively in grade level, department, division and all employee meetings
• Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the day, such as recess, lunch and breaks, and during field trips and other events
• Lead other extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, such as clubs
• Option to coach sports for the winter and/or spring seasons

Requirements

• Ability to teach Grade 8 Physical Sciences (basic chemistry and physics) and Grade 9 Biology; a candidate’s content expertise may inform the courses ultimately assigned to the position.
• Ability to connect with students at the middle school age level (12-15 years old)
• Relevant experience teaching and assessing student learning in Grades 7, 8 and 9
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
