Maine Central Institute, an independent secondary Town Academy located in Pittsfield, Maine is seeking an experienced Controller to help lead our finance team. This financial and operations professional will manage and direct all financial accounting and reporting for the school. The responsibilities include fiscal planning and forecasting, administering budgets, reporting and compliance. The Controller works closely with the Business Manager and the Headmaster, Board of Trustees, and Administrative Team to achieve the school’s mission and program goals as well as to formulate strategic initiatives and allocate school resources that will enhance the overall learning environment at MCI.
This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative, highly motivated, team-oriented school business leader with successful business/financial management experience in an independent school, college, not-for-profit organization, or in a small business environment. It is necessary that this business professional have a strong desire to actively participate in school community activities and support the students.
Responsibilities:
- Oversees and directs treasury, budgeting, audit, tax, accounting, purchasing, real estate and insurance activities for the school.
- Oversees school’s business records.
- Assists the school Board’s finance/investment committee with investment activities.
- Appraises the school’s financial position and issues periodic financial, operating and annual reports.
- Oversees the school’s investment accounting and planning and manages the relationship with the external investment company vendors.
- Directs and coordinates the school’s budget program and issues budget updates and reports.
- Coordinates the annual audit and implements recommendations.
- Supervises, guides and motivates the accounting staff.
- Directs and analyzes studies of general economic, business and financial conditions and their impact on the school’s policies and operations.

Qualifications:
- Bachelors, MBA or Masters Degree in accounting or business
- 5+ years of experience in a not-for-profit environment
- Strong knowledge of the following areas: accounting, financial reporting, investments, payroll, budgeting, and benefits administration.
- An energetic, well organized and self-directed team player with strong accounting and operations experience.
- A hands-on leadership style indicative of someone who is willing to “roll up their sleeves” to get the job done.
- An intelligent and articulate individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills who can relate to students, faculty, staff and trustees.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, develop and manage staff.
- Analytical and problem solving skills, along with attention to detail.
- Solid computer proficiency in Word, Excel and accounting systems.
- Experience with Blackbaud is a plus.
