Interlochen Center for the Arts seeks applicants for the position of Instructor of Clarinet. The successful candidate will provide individual instruction to Arts Academy (IAA) clarinet students, coach sectionals for the IAA orchestra and wind symphony, participate in side-by-side rehearsals with the large ensembles, actively recruit prospective students to the Academy (and help with recruitment to Interlochen Arts Camp as appropriate), and teach other courses as assigned. Beyond the traditional classroom responsibilities, all faculty at IAA assist in providing student mentorship and advising for aspiring artists in a boarding school setting. The Interlochen 5, key capacities that IAA faculty help reinforce, include mindfulness, wellness and resilience, creative capacity, interdisciplinary perspective and collaboration, global and cultural perspective, and community and citizen artistry. All Academy faculty focus on educating the whole student, working with high school students to develop their artistry and their citizenship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach private lessons to Interlochen Arts Academy clarinet students
- Coach chamber music and participate in all woodwind area activities
- Coach sectionals for Orchestra and Wind Symphony
- When applicable, teach other courses in the Music Division as deemed appropriate
- Lead a student advisory section
- Provide appropriate grading, attendance and evaluations of student progress as required by the music division
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administration
- Collaborate with other faculty members
- Actively recruit clarinet students
- Teach the whole student, working with other faculty and colleagues
- Assist clarinet students with the college application process
- Perform on the faculty chamber music series
- Assist with the assessment of school owned instruments
- Participate in departmental and employee meetings and serve on committees as directed
- Other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities:
Education: Master’s degree in clarinet performance required or commensurate with professional experience
Experience:
- Minimum of two years of significant teaching experience at the college level and/or with high school students.
- Demonstrated excellence as a professional clarinetist, with a record of significant achievements in solo, chamber music, and large ensemble settings.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute positively to the overall artistic environment at Interlochen.
- Possess a genuine passion for education and a commitment to fostering the artistic growth and well-being of students.
- Strong communication skills, both in one-on-one interactions with students and in broader musical community engagement.
- A commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
Equipment Familiarity: Mac Laptop, Google Suite
Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:
- Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks.
- Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
