Job Summary
Assists the Athletic Director in the overall administration of the High School athletic program. Responsible for the direct supervision and leadership of athletic coaches. Serves as a representative of Kamehameha Schools (KS) to various athletic organizations.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provides direct supervision and leadership to athletic coaches, including making hire and discharge recommendations, setting performance standards, and developing, implementing and maintaining a constructive feedback program for all coaches. Conducts season-end performance appraisals of all varsity head coaches and ensures that appraisals on other head coaches and assistant coaches are completed. Reviews performance appraisals of all coaches and works with head coaches to address specific performance concerns of any of their coaching staff. Coaches, mentors, and motivates coaching staff to make full use of individual capabilities and skills. Ensures that regular supervision of coaches occurs during practices and games. In collaboration with Athletic Director, responsible for creating, aligning and maintaining the middle school athletic program. In addition, provides athletic services to the elementary program as needed.
- Assists the Athletic Director in ensuring smooth operations and administration of the K-12 school athletic program. Assumes management and supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Athletic Director. Ensures coordination with campus athletic facilities manager for use of facilities as needed.
- Attends as many KS athletic events as possible. Develops rapport with students, parents and the public through high visibility at practices and games. Assists the Athletic Director in promoting and fostering open communication with coaches, athletes, parents and others. Informs Athletic Director of conflicts or situations as appropriate. Makes recommendations for resolution to the Athletic Director.
- Serves as a representative of Kamehameha Schools to the affiliated league and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA). Responsible to present an appropriate public image of KS in interactions with members of these associations, the media and the general public. Disseminates sports information to media as appropriate (e.g. game scores, etc.).
- Develops and implements certification programs for athletic coaches, as needed, to include: Mini-Bus certification, first-aid/CPR certification and national coaching certification. Coordinates, plans, conducts and/or procures internal resources/external vendors to conduct appropriate workshops and/or training programs for athletic coaches.
- Collaborates with Athletic Counselor to ensure that students receive necessary counseling and guidance with primary emphasis on athletes who are pursuing higher education opportunities, including guidance to students who may qualify for athletic programs at the NCAA Division I, II or II levels or the NAIA, working in conjunction with High School College Counselors, college representatives and parents, and assisting students in obtaining and/or applying for scholarships and/or financial aid. Works with athletic coaches to submit recommendations for Scholarship Awards to Athletic counselor.
- Makes recommendations to the Athletic Director on program enhancements (i.e. capital improvements, permanent equipment, uniforms, alternate funding options, etc.) to maintain a strong and comprehensive athletic program.
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Minimum 3 years of related work experience.

- Experience managing, mentoring and directing a large staff.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to relate effectively with a variety of individuals to includes students, coaches, other KS staff, physicians, parents, teachers, administrators, media personnel, alumni, etc. Skilled in conflict resolution.
- Knowledge of National Federal High School Sports Rules, ILH Policies and Procedures, and HHSAA Policies and Procedures.
- Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
- Must be able to travel to offsite locations on island and within the state as needed.
- Must be willing to learn and exhibit a commitment to an improved, high-quality education system for Native Hawaiian learners, and KS organizational values.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Athletic Administration.
- Masters Degree in Sports Administration or equivalent.
- Previous coaching experience.
- Familiarity with employment laws.

- Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
- Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
