Stone Ridge is seeking a Middle School Dean of Students to begin work in July 2024.
Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland. With over 750 students, and rooted in the Goals of Sacred Heart education, Stone Ridge inspires young women to lead and serve, through lives of purpose that integrate faith, intellect, community, social action, and personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.
The Middle School Dean of Students is responsible for, in collaboration with the Head of Middle School, the overall operations of Student Life in the Middle School. As a member of the School’s Management Team, the MS Dean of Students works closely with the Head of Middle School and the Assistant Head of Middle School for Academics, as well as with all faculty and staff, to ensure that the program and operations reflect the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education as best practices in technology and pedagogy. The Middle School Dean of Students is committed to the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education through a professional, strategic, and caring demeanor. Currently, the Dean of Students position is a 12-month position.
The Middle School Dean of Students:
- is a hands-on advocate for “the building of Community as a Christian value” and adherence to community norms as articulated in the Middle School Student Handbook.
- works directly with the Head of Middle School on all issues involving Student Life and programming.
- oversees and guides all aspects of Student Life, including developing a culture of honor, developing student leadership, assisting with the Advisory Program, moderating Expert Hours (student clubs), and assisting with the Student Council.
- coordinates and facilitates student events including Student Orientation, field trips, the Grade 8 days and dance, Big Gator/Little Gator programming, and Conge.
- supports the welcome and onboarding of new students.
- maintains the calendar for MS Student Life and manages the Student-Life budget.
- along with the Head of Middle School, attends to matters of student comportment and discipline, including facilitation of discipline hearings and Restorative Circle processes.
- assists with DEI initiatives and facilitates a culture of inclusion and belonging among students in the Middle School.
- serves on the Admissions Committee, Student Support Team, and the Management Team
- liaises with the Admissions Office to coordinate Open House, student panels and Discovery Days; liaises with the Parent Association for MS activities (Halloween, Christmas, Spring Party, etc.)
- serves as Team Leader for two grade levels
- assists in the annual editing the Student Handbook
- coordinates lunch seating plans
- leads a student advisory and teaches the equivalent of 2 classes or a 50% course load, depending on academic discipline.
- communicates appropriately and regularly with students, faculty, and parents on issues involving student scheduling, behavior, and emergency preparedness
- leads weekly Middle School Assemblies and one grade-level meeting
- writes the weekly Gator Newsletter
- teaches a 50% load
The desired candidate has:
- Teaching experience
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong organizational and follow-through ability
- Strong problem-solving and project-management skills
- Collegial disposition and ability to work with and alongside adults in the community
- Sense of humor, creativity, situational awareness, and flexibility
- Passion for and experience with working with middle-grade girls
- Master’s degree (valued but not required)
- Proficiency with Google Suite and Zoom (valued but not required)
