William Penn Charter School is a Quaker, all gender, pre-K-12 independent, day school in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. Established in 1689 by William Penn and members of the Religious Society of Friends, Penn Charter is a community guided by Quaker testimonies and the central belief that there is "that of God" in every person. William Penn Charter School seeks per-diem Middle School Substitute Educators to cover short and long term teacher absences during the 2023-2024 school year. Applicants must possess an undergraduate or graduate degree in education or a related field (an advanced degree is strongly preferred) and have at least 3 years of experience working with children.
The successful candidate will embrace student-centered pedagogy, model curiosity and a desire for professional growth and exhibit a willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues. Additionally, they will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching practice and in building relationships with all members of our community. The ability to effectively respond to student behaviors and engage in child-centered activities is central to the role. Familiarity with the principles and practices of Quakerism and Quaker education and Responsive Classroom practices is highly desirable.
Essential Functions:
- Deliver instruction (daily lesson plans) for Teachers
- Supervise and ensure the safety of children at all times indoors and outdoors (e.g., classroom, gymnasium, playgrounds, fields)
- Support students' social and emotional skills and growth
Competencies:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- High energy, initiative and strong work ethic
- Proficient in G Suite, online learning tools a plus
- Ability to remain professional and courteous while interacting with students, colleagues and supervisors
- Strong organizational skills and patience
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work
Physical Demands:
- Standing for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to lift at least 15 pounds
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions
Required Qualifications:
- An undergraduate degree in education or a related field
- At least three years of documented experience in child care or a classroom/education setting (experience in independent and Quaker schools is highly desirable)
- A love of working with students
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in education or a related field
- Familiarity with the principles and practices of Quakerism and Quaker education
