Division Head/Principal
As a school, we value kindness and inclusivity, intellectual curiosity and academic rigor, empathy and encouragement, and a capacity for joy. The Head of Upper School models these very qualities while finding ways to cultivate them in our students. St. Albans seeks to graduate students who “understand and value their agency in the world,” according to our school philosophy, and the head of Upper School, reporting to, and partnering with the Headmaster, is responsible for creating an environment – in and out of the classroom – where students discover their capacity to grow and serve others through knowledge, compassion, and creativity.
Specifically, areas of responsibilities will include the following:
- Overseeing the daily operations of the Upper School, working with approximately 45 full-time and part-time faculty members to educate 330 boys in grades 9-12.
- Looking over all aspects of the Upper School program -- spiritual, academic, athletic, artistic, and social.
- Being present and engaged with Upper School boys and the faculty, from morning drop off to evening and weekend performances and games.
- Fostering the development of positive relationships among the boys, across grades, and between teachers and students, and creating a sense of common purpose, with the understanding that boys learn best when they feel loved and known.
- Working closely with the headmaster to align the Upper School program with the school’s philosophy and the headmaster’s insights into the school’s future. Clearly articulating this shared vision and goals to faculty, students, and parents.
- Working with colleagues at the National Cathedral School to develop and administer our Upper School coordinate program in academics, arts and athletics.
- With the dean of faculty, hiring and retaining a diverse, intellectually engaged, and inspiring Upper School faculty.
- Supervising and sustaining the faculty, by welcoming them to our school, supporting them in their professional growth as teachers, creating a collegial community of diverse individuals, and encouraging them to exemplify the best moral, intellectual, and social behavior.
- Developing positive relationships with families, listening to parent concerns, and educating parents about school programs and policies.
- Collaborating with other colleagues on the Headmaster’s senior administrative team, and keeping abreast of the key issues in other areas of school administration, including finance, fundraising, building and grounds, capital projects, and governance.
- With the Academic Dean, developing curriculum, establishing academic standards, and reviewing standards for grade reports, comments, and student records.
- With the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, supporting hiring, faculty retention, and student programming.
- With the Director of Counseling and the Chaplains, supporting the social and emotional health of students.
- With the Deans of Students, working on honor and disciplinary issues, and attending to the behavior and comportment of the student body.
- Overseeing the Honor and Discipline Councils, supervising the advisory program, and working with the form deans on freshman orientation, advisories, and student leadership.
- With the Student Council, enriching student life through programming such as homecoming and school dances.
- Meeting with Parents’ Association volunteers, including parent grade representatives, and Christmas House Tour and Prom Committee leaders.
- Partnering with the Athletic Director to encourage student participation in athletics and supervise student behavior at events.
- In conjunction with the Upper School academic dean and dean of faculty, working with academic department chairs through the Curriculum Committee to establish academic policies and review curricular changes.
- Supervising the Upper School academic dean and Upper School administrative assistant, and, in conjunction with the academic dean, the school registrar.
- Staying in close contact with the director of college counseling and the College Counseling Office to provide support for St. Albans students at all stages of the college process.
- Serving as a member of the Upper School Admissions Committee.
- Attending all Governing Board meetings and appropriate Governing Board committee meetings.
The position may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Experience: Minimum of 3 years of classroom experience required; Preference will be given to candidates who also have previous supervisory experience within a school.
Education: Advanced degree preferred
Certifications: N/A
Preferred Qualifications: Previous work within an Independent School
