The Blake School seeks a creative 9th-12th grade English teacher who is eager to help students read and write with rigor, insight and imagination.
Blake English teachers help students develop facility with language, construct interpretations grounded in analysis, deepen their intercultural competence, participate effectively in small group and seminar discussions, and think critically about the perspectives and narratives that frame the literature we read.
In the English department, teachers collaborate with their colleagues to develop their practice, design innovative curricula and create a coherent experience for students. In addition to classroom instruction, English teachers confer frequently with each of their students about their writing, meet with grade level teams, hold semester conferences with parents, support students within our advisory program and participate in school initiatives.
This is a 1.0 FTE ongoing position starting in the 2024-25 school year. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes a community strong and empowers students to engage across differences.
The committee will begin the review of applications in December with the intent of inviting finalists to campus as early as late January. Blake will typically cover the travel and lodging costs for finalist candidates visiting from out of town.
The ideal candidate will:
- have at least a bachelor's degree in a related field
- demonstrate experience with student-centered teaching practices such as explicit teaching of reading and writing skills in context, discussion-based activities and inquiry approaches
- be able to both nurture and challenge Upper School students as necessary to meet the developmental and learning needs of each individual
- have experience instructing diverse populations of students
- have experience in shaping curricula at the Upper School level
- demonstrate prior success in working collaboratively and harmoniously with other adults in an educational setting
- be as passionate about teaching our youngest students as in working with our oldest students
