The Medical Director is a year-round administrative faculty member primarily responsible for directing and maintaining high-quality health care to students at Choate Rosemary Hall. Total health care needs are understood to include medical and surgical care, health advocacy, health education, and psychosocial support.

Essential Functions:

• Provides for direct medical services to students on a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week basis when school is in session, arranging back-up coverage as appropriate. Medical responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient medical care at the Pratt Health Center, performing minor surgical procedures, and overseeing the care of students admitted to hospitals or referred to other healthcare providers.  Provide health education and psychosocial support to students during the course of their treatment.
• Maintains professional relationships with local healthcare organizations and professionals to ensure access to necessary referral and consultative services.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Supervises the clinical activities of staff within the health services to ensure the provision of high-quality care to students.
• Supervises services by independent practitioners such as nurse practitioners, counselors, and athletic trainers.
• Collaborates with and renders medical support to the on-site mental health providers.
• Serves as the clinical liaison between the Health Services staff, other school personnel (such as faculty and administration), and the student’s family members, ensuring the communication of up-to-date medical information to appropriate parties.
• Serves as the primary clinical representative of the health services to the school community. Participates in appropriate internal and external committee assignments and meetings. Promotes the image of the health services to the community through enhanced communication about the nature of services provided and overall philosophy guiding care.
• Ensures that the health service meets annual budgetary objectives.
• Participates in the development and maintenance of complete, accurate, and timely student medical records.
• Approves (and develops as needed) all protocols for patient care.
• In conjunction with the health services personnel, participates in an ongoing system for evaluating patient care.
• Engages in ongoing professional growth and development as directed by supervisors
• Serves on a team with the Dean of Students Director of Counseling, and Director of Studies to evaluate and determine leaves of absence.

Secondary Duties:

• Collaborates with the Health and Wellness Coordinator on health education programming.
• Provides guidance and expertise for health and wellness programming for the community.
• Participates in the development and implementation of short- and long-range plans for health services to ensure the continued provision of appropriate and high-quality services to students, particularly relating to physical facilities, staffing needs, and new program development.
• In concert with relevant Health Center staff members, assumes responsibility for the development of new clinical programs for the school, particularly in the area of health education and prevention.
• Maintains professional competency through participation in relevant continuing education activities.
• Reports to the Dean of Students on administrative and clinical issues and the Dean of Faculty on educational issues connected with the academic curriculum.
• Oversees the activities of the health service’s administration, nursing, training, laboratory, nutrition, as well as outside consultants.

Requirements

• Graduate of an approved medical school and licensed to practice medicine in the State of Connecticut.
• Pediatric/Adolescent medicine training and experience preferred, gynecology and sports medicine skills as well as interest in the emotional health of adolescents.
• National Board Certification/Eligibility.
• Proficient in Medicat Software.
