Abington Friends School seeks a part-time college counselor to join our two-person team in January or June of 2024.

College Guidance at AFS is a student-centered process based on the philosophy of finding the right fit: colleges that provide the appropriate academic opportunities, social/cultural environment, is financially affordable, and where the student is admissible.
The ideal candidate is an engaging person interested in supporting students and their families through the college selection and application process, starting with our 11th grade class. The AFS guiding philosophy is to help each student find the right academic, social, and financial fit, where they are admissible. We are looking for someone who demonstrates empathy and cultural competency while working with students and families from a wide variety of racial, socioeconomic, neurodivergent, and otherwise diverse family structures.

Primary Responsibilities
- Manage the college counseling process for 7-10 students
- Meet with juniors through the spring to finalize senior course choices, and to create and build college lists
- Meet with each student’s parents/guardians
- Write individualized letters of recommendation
- Meet with seniors in the fall to finalize college lists, assist with strategic thinking about application types, review essays, proofread/edit applications, etc.
- Handle highly sensitive material with discretion
- Attend weekly department meetings
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of experience with college counseling or college admissions
- Familiarization with Scoir (or similar programs)
- Strong organization, time management, and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to connect with students and families, including having sometimes difficult conversations
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- An interest in working with teenagers as well as with parents/guardians
