Spartanburg Day School is seeking an Upper School English Faculty member for the 2024-2025 school year. This position joins a department known for its intellectual curiosity, curricular development, and commitment to students. Like other departments, the English Department enjoys the autonomy to develop courses, pedagogies, and assessments based on sound research and developmentally appropriate practice. In addition to Advanced Placement courses, the English Department offers several electives that enhance its college-preparatory curriculum.
More specifically, the primary considerations for this position include (but are not limited to):
- Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching upper-level English.
- Proven experience teaching AP English Language and English 11 Honors or similar advanced courses.
- Effective verbal and written communication, a desire to develop meaningful relationships with students, colleagues, and families, and an abiding sense of humor.
- Interest in developing elective offerings based on student interest and academic expertise.
- Sponsoring a student organization or coaching an athletic team.
- Serving as an advisor or co-advisor to 10-12 students in the Upper School.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and teach curriculum for AP English Language, English 11 Honors, and an elective course, ensuring adherence to the school's academic standards.
- Create engaging and dynamic lesson plans that promote critical thinking, effective communication, and analytical skills in students.
- Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment encouraging student participation, curiosity, and intellectual growth.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to facilitate their academic development and growth.
- Serve as an advisor to a group of 10-12 students, guiding them on academic, personal, and extracurricular matters relating to their school experience.
- Organize and lead extracurricular activities that foster community and promote student engagement.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop interdisciplinary initiatives and contribute to the school's educational programs.
- Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and parent-teacher conferences as required.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, grades, and performance.
- Participate in school events, including but not limited to open houses, Upper School events, and school-wide initiatives.
- Encourage a passion for literature, writing, and critical analysis among students.
- Provide instructional support and differentiation for students of various levels and learning styles in the same class.
- Work with Academic Support staff to provide assistance for students with learning differences.
- Communicate proactively with Advisors, Grade Deans, and Head of Upper School to support students with social and academic challenges
