Job Description: The Global Languages Department focuses on linguistic development and proficiency, as well as cultural competency in support of the school’s tradition of celebrating differences of ethnicities and backgrounds. The department offers Spanish in Junior PK-Grade 12. This position supports the department’s goals in educating Middle School (grades 5-8) students in Spanish and, depending on need, other related subjects.
Key responsibilities:
- Teach Spanish grammar, conversation, spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary to Grades 5-7
- Teach culture and some history of Spanish-speaking countries and regions
- Serve as advisor to Middle School students and student organizations
- Participate in the life of the Middle School through coaching, advising clubs/activities, serving on committees, and/or attending school events
- Implement innovative methods, including experiential-based learning, to engage students and deepen their interest in and understanding of global languages and cultures
- Pursue ongoing professional development.
- Participate in faculty, divisional, and departmental meetings
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of School, Assistant Head of School, and/or Head of Middle School
Qualifications:
- Four-year degree, preferably in Spanish, required
- Enjoys working with teenagers and pre-teens
- Experience working in schools, preferably in private or independent education
- Travel experience and familiarity with Spanish cultures and customs, preferred
- Innovative, flexible, relationship-focused, excellent work ethic, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Appreciation for the unique character and special demands of working at an independent school
- Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team
- Ability to meet deadlines, balance competing priorities, and maintain a sense of humor
- Passion for education and the EDS mission
