Purpose:
As a long term substitute for a math teacher, you will be the acting homebase teacher for an 8th grade section, as well as teaching two sections of Algebra I (8th Grade) and two sections of Fundamentals of Mathematics (6th Grade) in a rotating block schedule. You will be responsible to work within a scope and sequence for these courses by creating and implementing lesson plans as well as grading any work that comes in during your time at VMS. Independent thought and creativity in making adjustments will be important. Expect to work closely with all the members of the math department in formal and informal meetings throughout your tenure in order to ensure vertical alignment, appropriate goals and objectives, and pedagogical direction.
What You Will Do:
- Work with Vail Mountain School as a full-time faculty member working with 6th - 8th grade students between roughly January 24, 2024 and April 30, 2024.
- Work with the permanent VMS faculty member in January to coordinate coverage of the classes including Schoology training/set up, assessment discussion, and curriculum review.
- Implement curriculum, provide instruction, and complete assessment for the following courses:
- Algebra 1 (8th)
- Fundamentals of Mathematics (6th)
- Homebase and Advisory duties for your 8th grade students
- House and Ski Day responsibilities
- Provide general supervision of students
- Communicate in a timely and professional manner with students, parents and colleagues
- Attend related meetings which may occur outside of the school day
- Assist with afternoon and evening programs as requested
Who You Are:
- A “raise your hand” type of person. You’re interested in participating in school events like orientation trips, field trips, sitting at lunch tables, and assisting with carpool. You are ready to participate fully in the life of the school.
- Bachelor’s Degree from four-year college or university required
- Deeply knowledgeable in the subject area; displaying dedication, passion, inspiration, the ability to individualize learning, and the capacity to help all students succeed.
- You have experience teaching and managing a classroom. We would love to see candidates who have taught in an independent school before, but it isn't required.
