The mission of The GreenMount School is to provide a creative education for kindergarten through grade eight emphasizing multicultural, cooperative, and experiential learning supported by strong family participation.
The GreenMount School began as the dream child of six adventurous parents devoted to a model for child-centered education. The school opened in 1993 as a one-room, church-basement parent CO-OP, and now GreenMount is a thriving school community inhabiting the entire building and grounds of the former Wyman Park Recreation Center in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore. We have nine grades of wonderful students in kindergarten through 8th grade, a talented team of teachers and administrative staff, and a dedicated cadre of parent volunteers.

OPPORTUNITY
The Head of School will serve as the School’s executive leader, school leader and face of GreenMount. The Head of School will be responsible for providing institutional and educational leadership through collaborative development and implementation of the School’s mission in a manner that promotes and embodies the whole School ethos.
This is an exciting opportunity for the 5th head in the history of the school to lead a community with a culture of giving that values individuals and believes in equity and inclusion. The individual in this position will have the opportunity to develop into a change agent responsible for establishing a sustainable and enduring student-centered model of education.
The GreenMount School's community-based service learning program graduates prepared advocates who are ready to make positive change in their neighborhood, city, country, and the world. GreenMount’s small school community provides leaders with a unique opportunity to have an impact on students on both an individual and school level through frequent student interactions during Community Days, Theme Events, and classroom activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities of the Head of School include:
Organizational Leadership:
- Engage in ongoing strategic planning that develops, articulates, and strengthens a vision focused on the critical elements of the school, including the academic program, hiring and developing staff, fundraising, student admissions, and family support.
- Drive growth strategies, including increased school enrollment, expanded fundraising opportunities and continued community engagement.
- Anticipate potential challenges and proactively develop strategic solutions to ensure the school's continued success.
- Implement and manage the Strategic Plan in conjunction with the Board and applicable committees.
Instructional Leadership:
- Ensure adequate curriculum development and educational materials with a focus on creative, cooperative, and multicultural learning; ensure that sufficient special student supports are provided in the context of the School's instructional program.
- Plan and implement annual teacher evaluations.
- Support the development and execution of professional development that is meaningful and empowering.
- Use data to inform practice and make strategic recommendations; lead and coach others in the use of academic data and other evidence to inform decision-making and instruction.
Equity Leadership:
- Build a strong culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
- Champion initiatives that advance socioemotional and academic equity for students, including neurodiverse students, BIPOC students, and other historically underserved student groups.
People Leadership:
- Lead through influence and emotional intelligence, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment that values equity and excellence.
- Hire, retain, and develop new and existing staff.
- Collaborate with and supervise the work of the Office Administrator, Academic Facilitator, Student Support Facilitator, Development Director, Admissions Director, Facilities Director, Technology Director, and all other employees of the school.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication:
- Through interpersonal skills, transparent communication and engagement, build and maintain strong relationships with various stakeholders, including staff, students, parents, the Board of Directors, and the broader community.
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Board for all staff by regularly attending and reporting at monthly and special Board meetings.
- Serve as the public spokesperson for the school and primary liaison to outside agencies and organizations.
Operations & Facilities Management:
- Support staff in responsibilities for day-to-day operation of the school, administration, office and building management.
- Manage team to strengthen shared operational services for the organization, including facilities, safety, compliance, technology, and procurement.
Fundraising & Budget Management:
- Manage financial resources, ensuring budget alignment and fiscal responsibility. Provide transparent financial reporting to stakeholders.
- Serve as an external ambassador, effectively engaging a sophisticated philanthropic and corporate community to ensure strong fundraising success and impact.
- Work with the Development Director and the Board of Trustees to manage annual fundraising campaigns, prepare grant submissions, and develop effective communications strategies with philanthropic and corporate communities.

QUALIFICATIONS
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Head of School candidate will be/will have:
- An accomplished leader with 5+ years of administrative success in a non profit or school environment in a community similar to the one GreenMount serves; additionally, 4+ years of classroom teaching experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to GreenMount’s mission of providing a creative education for kindergarten through grade eight emphasizing multi-cultural, cooperative, and experiential learning supported by strong family participation.
- Culturally competent and a self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other issues of difference in society and is able to lead direct conversations about them.
- A builder of authentic relationships with community partners, policymakers, funders and other supporters, able to engage with a variety of individuals and speaks in a clear and compelling manner about the organization’s goals and priorities.
- A proven track record of building and nurturing a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in previous roles.
- A proven track record of leading with integrity, transparency, and accountability.
- A progressive and adaptable thinker with a student-centered approach and knowledge of the academic and social-emotional needs of students.
- A deep understanding of non-profit and school governance.
- Knowledge of the academic and social-emotional needs of students.
- Interest and/or experience in leading and supporting development and fundraising.
