Oregon Episcopal School seeks an Associate Athletic Director to begin duties in August 2024. This academic year position will require 2 additional weeks beyond the academic year.

JOB SUMMARY:
The assistant athletic director supports the athletic director (AD) in articulating to the entire community, including external audiences, the role of OES athletics in carrying out the School’s mission. This position supports the AD in advocating for the entire OES athletic program and its power to nurture young people and enhance learning and character development through the student-athlete experience. The Assistant AD supports the AD in all program operations and provides management and oversight to ensure that it functions smoothly and in alignment with the school's overarching mission, values, and strategic objectives.
In addition to the qualifications detailed below, the successful associate athletic director will promote the School’s commitment to attracting and retaining a highly talented and diverse faculty, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to support the School’s educational mission. As professional educators in a dynamic living and learning environment, employees are required to model professional behavior and observe appropriate adult-student boundaries to support a safe and supportive community for teaching and learning. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated gift for engaging a diverse student body and strengthening the inclusive community of OES.
In addition to teaching or administrative responsibilities, employees participate in a variety of activities typical to the independent school environment, including advising, committee work, support of experiential education, and other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Athletic Program
- Collaborate with the A.D. in sustaining and nourishing the dual-core of OES athletics: the no-cut team policy and the competitive varsity program that inspires the pursuit of excellence.
- Celebrate the student-athlete equally across all programs and promote an appreciation for the value of vigorous activity, high achievement, healthy habits, and collective, collaborative effort.
- In collaboration with the Athletic Director, create a middle school program that aligns with the upper school athletic program.
- Represent OES at the various league, district, and state athletic associations
- Develop and evaluate athletic program offerings, including spirit events, after-school programs, and summer camp opportunities
- Work in both the boys’ and girls’ programs as assigned to help prepare athletics and the Upper School to be leaders in the national conversation about schools, sports, and gender.
- Coach at least one season.
Admissions and Student Retention
- Serve on the Middle School Admissions Committee and 8 to 9 transition team
- Support 5th through 9th-grade retention efforts, including meeting with students and families to discuss opportunities at OES
- Represent OES Athletics at LS, MS, and US Open Houses, parent receptions, and other admissions events as assigned
Coach and Student-Athlete Leadership
- Work with AD to orient new coaches to OES athletics philosophy and facilitate annual training.
- Provide direct supervision and leadership to assigned athletic coaches, including making hire and discharge recommendations, setting performance standards, and developing, implementing, and maintaining a constructive feedback program for all coaches.
- Conducts season-end performance appraisals of all varsity head coaches and ensures that appraisals on other head coaches and assistant coaches are completed.
- Reviews performance appraisals of all coaches and works with head coaches to address specific performance concerns of any of their coaching staff.
- Coaches, mentors, and motivates assigned coaching staff to make full use of individual capabilities and skills. Ensures that regular supervision of coaches occurs during practices and games.
- Develop and implement certification programs for athletic coaches, as needed, to include: Mini-Bus certification, first-aid/CPR certification, and national coaching certification. Coordinates, plans, conducts, and/or procures internal resources/external vendors to conduct appropriate workshops and/or training programs for athletic coaches.
- Initiate, encourage, and support efforts by coaches to help their players realize their power for good by teaching sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship on the courts and fields and off.
- Develop and implement annual leadership training for captains of all sports teams in coordination with the Assistant Head of Upper School for Community
- Work with Community Board and Asst. Head of US for Community to plan and execute the pep rallies (3x a year)
Event Supervision, Facilities, and Equipment
- Makes recommendations to the AD on program enhancements (i.e. capital improvements, permanent equipment, uniforms, alternate funding options, etc.) to maintain a strong and comprehensive athletic program.
- Develops rapport with students, parents, and the public through high visibility at practices and games. Assists the AD in promoting and fostering open communication with coaches, athletes, parents, and others. Informs AD of conflicts or situations as appropriate. Makes recommendations for resolution to the Athletic Director.
- Supervise home athletic events and support teams during district and state playoff games.
Development, Marketing, and Communication
- Assure effective communication within the department, between coaches and parents, and between athletics and other departments/divisions of the school.
- Coordinate athletic announcements in Upper and Middle School gatherings
- Partner with Marketing and Communications to promote OES athletics through active management of web content, social media, digital newsletter, etc.
- Collaborate as appropriate with the Development Office on fundraising events and maintain a historical archive of team and individual athletic accomplishments.
- Serve on the OES Athletic Hall of Fame Committee
- Plan and oversee National Letter of Intent or celebratory signings
- Write a weekly blog celebrating OES Athletics
Administrative Duties
- Support the A.D. in developing and administering the Athletics Department budget.
- Support the A.D. in coordinating with the Facilities Department to ensure upkeep of athletics facilities including fields, gym, electronic equipment needed for athletic contests, etc.
- Delegate organizational tasks in a timely and effective manner to the Athletic Department Administrative Assistant.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 3 years of experience in a related field
- Bachelor’s degree in athletic administration or a related discipline
- Successful track record working with student-athletes and coaches
- Intercultural competence, ability to work with sensitivity and effectiveness with students, families, and colleagues of diverse backgrounds and identities, demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion for people of all backgrounds and identities
- Digital literacy; intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Docs/Sheets, and other web-based applications; database and
- Video-conferencing experience, as appropriate to job duties; flexibility and willingness to learn as digital tools evolve
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 5 years of teaching experience in physical education and/or coaching
- Master’s degree in athletic administration, physical education, or a related discipline
- Experience coaching a sport for a minimum of five years with a preference for experience coaching and building a middle school girls lacrosse program
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Verbal and written communication skills, ability to manage confidential information in compliance with the law and best practice
- Ability to consistently apply principles of equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in day-to-day work and in the broader workplace community
- Organizational skills, ability to work well on teams
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit at computer and keyboard for moderate periods
- Mobility sufficient to move about the campus, to include climbing stairs
- Sight and hearing adequate to perform the duties of the job, ability to communicate clearly
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis
