Maine Coast Semester seeks a Latin Instructor for one student (for the 2024 Fall Semester only) to teach and guide them through their sending school’s curriculum. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working one-on-one with occasional availability for email exchange and questions and several visits to campus each week (timing is flexible). Chewonki classes are inherently creative and student centered with highly motivated students.
Location: Wiscasset, Maine (On Campus)
Reports to: Director of Maine Coast Semester
Schedule: September 3, 2024 - December 20, 2024 ; approximately 3.5 hours per week
About Chewonki Foundation
Located on Maine’s rugged coastline, Maine Coast Semester offers a small group of diverse and academically ambitious high school juniors the opportunity to develop the habits of independent learning, an appreciation for the natural world, and the chance to practice the art of building a sustainable community.
Essential Responsibilities
Teach Latin to one student two times per week in person on Chewonki campus in Wiscasset.
No other department meetings will be required.
Offer academic support for students outside of class.
Work to honor and uphold the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and a lens of anti-racism in the best interest of participants, constituents, and staff across the organization.
Qualifications
Must complete fingerprinting requirements/pass Criminal Background Check of Maine Department of Education.
Attend required onboarding and training sessions (in-person/on campus).
A minimum of CPR and First Aid certification.
Must have previous experience teaching a language.
Highly motivated with excellent verbal and written communication.
Ability to develop creative solutions and provide ideas to effectively assist students.
Chewonki inspires transformative growth, teaches appreciation and stewardship of the natural world, and challenges people to build thriving, sustainable communities throughout their lives. Chewonki serves children ages 8-18 in summer, semester, and school-year programs; and provides training opportunities for educators and other outdoor professionals.
Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki is comprised of approximately 42 students and 16 faculty members, and is a unique semester-length school program of the Chewonki Foundation. As a residential school, it is designed to offer high school juniors and seniors the chance to be part of a vibrant community located on a 400-acre saltwater peninsula in Mid-coast Maine
