Dive In Commonwealth is a free summer and school-year program for high-achieving middle-school students from low-income communities across the greater Boston area. Starting the summer after sixth or seventh grade and lasting until the fall of their freshman year, Dive In students engage in rigorous classes and exciting extracurriculars, preparing them for private schools and the path to college. Like our parent school, Commonwealth School, Dive In empowers motivated students by offering enriching activities in a close-knit community of like-minded peers.Our unique urban campus is located in the heart of Boston’s historic Back Bay, easily accessible by public transportation.
Dive In Commonwealth seeks a Math Teacher for about two Saturdays each month during the 2024–2025 school year. The teacher will work with a small group of middle-school students to advance their practical knowledge of math, nurture their innate curiosity, cultivate their intellectual confidence, and strengthen general learning skills in the classroom and beyond. Dive In welcomes teaching applicants from both public and private schools as well as from local community centers; our hiring is informed by our mission to close achievement gaps across educational institutions and build bridges to historically neglected neighborhoods.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teach seventh graders
Implement a math curriculum created by our other math teacher of seventeen class sessions (60 minutes each) total
Maintain healthy teacher-student relationships
Collaborate with the Director, Assistant Director, and staff to support students
Assign final grades and/or write end-of-term assessments
Commit to the role for the entirety of the Saturday program dates (See “Schedule” below.)
Essential Skills and Qualifications
Commitment to Dive In’s mission and desire to help marginalized middle schoolers excel
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to implement lessons and collaborate with the other math teacher to ensure the consistency and progress of the math curriculum
Demonstrated interest in math and enthusiasm for the material
Experience leading, facilitating, or coaching a small group of people
High energy and a sense of humor!
Preferred Experience
Previous teaching experience and/or tutoring or camp-counseling experience
Experience working with middle-school-age students
While a bachelor’s degree is preferred, it is not required. If you have a strong understanding of math and a passion for education, we encourage you to apply.
