Position Summary
Provide counsel and referrals for Middle School students as requested by teachers, administrators, or parents. Meet with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to make referrals and recommendations. Work closely with teachers, advisors, nurse, and administrators to support student’s wellbeing. Provide consultation to parents, teachers, and administrators regarding student learning or behavior. Have affection for students in this age group, an understanding of their needs and energy, and a willingness to work collaboratively with student, parents, teachers, and administration.
Essential Duties:
Provide consultation for students and parents
Responsible for determination of student needs and making referrals
Collaboration and consultation with teacher, advisor, nurse and administration
Collaboration and consultation with other school Counselors
Close collaboration and consultation with providers in the community
Maintain confidential records of interaction and communication
Organize and present student, parent and teacher programs
Create and deliver presentations to the entire school community
Attend teacher and support team meetings as necessary
Work with student groups to address concerns within the school community
Nurture an inclusive environment in which all students can participate fully and have a sense of belonging
Recognize health and safety is a responsibility of every employee, take responsible care of self and others and comply with the school’s health and safety policies and protocols
Qualifications
Licensed professional counselor, school counselor certificate or MSW
Experience of 3+ years with Middle School students preferred
Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a variety of contacts while counseling and advocating for students
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate with all constituencies
Organization skills to maintain files, document interactions, and contacts
Confidentiality required in all matters
Coordinate and communicate the re-entry process for students with extended absences due to social/mental health concerns

Detroit Country Day School’s facilities are situated in two locations approximately three miles apart and less than one half hour from the center of Detroit. The Upper School (9-12) and Middle School (4-8) share adjoining campuses in Beverly Hills, where the administrative offices, facility services, safety and security services, and the main arts and athletics facilities are located. The Lower School (PreK-3) is located nearby in neighboring Bloomfield Hills. Both Beverly Hills and Bloomfield Hills are in Oakland County, which has the highest per capita income of any county in the state of Michigan and is one of the most affluent counties in the United States.
The Detroit Country Day Upper School offers a strong and varied program that provides numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their individual strengths and develop their potential. The rigorous college-preparatory program, which includes Honors and Advanced Placement courses in each discipline in addition to a diverse selection of electives, prepares students for college and beyond. In addition to a series of honors and Advanced Placement courses, students at Detroit Country Day Upper School may pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
