Job Description:
The teaching fellow program at St. Andrew’s offers those just beginning, or very early in their teaching careers the opportunity to enter the classroom with close mentorship and guidance from experienced teachers in their discipline and the dean of faculty development, opportunities to study and discuss teaching pedagogy and develop reflective practice with peer fellows and teacher-leaders, and training in core competencies for boarding school faculty outside of the classroom: coaching, advising, dorm parenting, and cultivating a culture of inclusion and belonging.
St. Andrew’s was founded in 1929 as an independent, Episcopal boarding school. The school educates about 315 students from around the world each year in an all-residential setting, and has a long-standing commitment to financial aid and socioeconomic diversity. Our students and faculty come from a wide range of backgrounds, traditions, and experiences, and it is this variety that creates a vibrant and challenging learning environment that makes our worlds larger.
An early career teacher joining the St. Andrew’s community should be eager to embrace ourpedagogical commitments, which center on teaching and empowering students to do the authentic work of the disciplines, focusing on the development of their thinking skills in the field. Our departments are creative and collegial, and successful candidates have a lively interest in scholarship in their discipline, collaboration, and professional development. All applicants should demonstrate a commitment to developing cultural competence.
These positions will involve full participation in the extracurricular and student life programs of this residential community.
While the teaching fellowship is for a single year, reappointment to the faculty may be possible based on an evaluation of the fellow’s performance in the classroom; the athletic, extracurricular, and residential life programs; and the school’s needs. Teaching fellows receive a stipend of $36,000, plus benefits, and on-campus housing.
We are eager to receive applications for fellowships in all disciplines taught at the school; we will update this listing as specific opportunities are identified, and will contact applicants who have sent their materials in anticipation of possible openings if they seem appropriate candidates for them.
Responsibilities:
Two or three class sections; one or more sections may be co-taught with an experienced teacher, and observation of experienced teachers will be built in to the fellow’s schedule;
Two or three seasons of athletic coaching, or two or three seasons of a major, non-athletic extracurricular program;
Dormitory duty twice a week;
Weekend duty once every four weekends;
Participation in school committees and activities.
Job Requirements:
Interested applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in the discipline of the fellowship for which they are applying, or a closely related field.
Applicants must have a passion for working with and living in community with adolescents.
Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or canceled, or disqualified from driving) is required.
