Capitol Hill Day School seeks a long-term substitute for a 7th and 8th Grade math teacher. This is an interim position, opening mid-February 2025 and running through mid-June 2025, resulting from a family leave vacancy.
At Capitol Hill Day School, learning is challenging, engaging, playful, and relevant to the real world. Students learn across subjects with an experiential curriculum that integrates not only academic subjects, but the arts, physical education, service learning, and technology. Through an extensive field education program, students take part in experiences beyond the classroom related to topics of study. Teachers collaborate with each other in developing, planning, and implementing curriculum; school-wide, they create a spirit of camaraderie through their interactions with students, parents, and other members of the staff. Also essential to the School’s program is its commitment to diversity, ensuring that students from varying backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles learn from and with each other. Emphasis is placed on building a classroom community that respects each individual while teaching children how to become caring, engaged members of the group.
Capitol Hill Day School students graduate with a love of learning, strong critical thinking abilities, an understanding of important ideas, and a healthy sense of self. Students develop a deep respect for their community and for diversity in all its forms.
Capitol Hill Day School’s middle school math program is a four-year sequence that thoughtfully and systematically helps students consolidate and deepen their learning of elementary math concepts while developing their understanding of algebraic principles, proportional reasoning, statistics, probability, and geometric thinking. Emphasis is placed on cooperative learning activities, inquiry-based lessons, and problem solving.
The main content associated with this position is Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. All students complete Algebra 1 by the end of their 8th Grade year; in addition, a small group of students has the opportunity to complete accelerated units of study in both 7th and 8th Grades.
Additionally, the Math teacher collaborates with other middle school faculty to create and facilitate interdisciplinary and project-based learning opportunities. As one member of a team of four “cohort leaders,” the Math teacher serves as a student advisor and helps ensure the smooth functioning of the weekly schedule in 7th and 8th Grades.
