Germantown Friends School is seeking a fulltime technology teacher to fill a faculty leave of absence through December 20, 2024, in our Middle and Upper Schools. The preferred candidate will be passionate about Computer Science and able to engage middle and high school students in hands-on technology learning. In middle school, the focus includes coding, 3D printing, and digital design, while upper school courses concentrate on robotics, electronics, and advanced design. The role also includes part-time coaching for a VEX Robotics team, offering students practical, competitive experience in robotics and teamwork. This position aims to inspire creativity and technical skill development at each stage of students' growth. Candidates must be highly organized, comfortable with coding concepts, able to operate maker space equipment, well-versed in Google Classroom, and enthusiastic about working with middle and high school students.
Teaching responsibilities include:
Teaching one section of 7th-grade Physical Computing, where students use Micro:bit and JavaScript to code and solve challenges.
Teaching one section of 6th-grade Computer Science, where students use JavaScript and CodeHS to learn the basics of writing programs.
Teaching one section of Electronics and Robotics Design in the Upper School, where students use Arduino devices to build complex projects, including robotic arms and arcade games.
Co-teaching one section of Machine Studio in the Upper School, where students use laser cutters and 3D printers to design solutions to engineering problems.
Collaborating on curriculum development with fellow Computer Science and Digital Media teachers.
Grading, reporting, and providing timely, individualized feedback to students.
Posting assignments and materials on Google Classroom.
Additional responsibilities, such as study hall supervision and participation in grade-level meetings.
A highly qualified candidate is someone who:
Holds a degree in Computer Science.
Enjoys and has experience teaching middle and upper school students.
Is eager to work with students individually and in small groups.
Has experience guiding students through challenging, tech-focused projects.
Is prepared to give timely, detailed, individualized feedback and guidance to students.
Has a broad range of interests and knowledge.
Is sensitive to individual learning styles and needs.
