General Summary: Provide music and vocal instruction to Upper and Middle School students by encouraging creative expression, and foster the discovery and development of talents in the field of vocal music while creating a positive learning environment for optimum learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead four curricular choirs: 6th grade chorus, 7th grade chorus, 8th grade chorus, and Upper School Concert Choir.
Coordinate choir participation at extracurricular events, including ceremonies and all-school events on campus.
Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
Maintain the choral music library.
Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal settings.
Collaborate with colleagues in the performing arts department.
Participate in WSMA Solo and Ensemble contest as a coach and collaborative pianist.
Teach students to read music, understand musical concepts, and appreciate the connection of music to history.
Adapt the curriculum to the needs of children with varying intellectual and musical abilities, as well as accommodation of a variety of instructional activities.
Communicate student progress with parents through formal and informal communication.
Plan and present choral concerts and attend colleagues’ performances.
Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve an optimal learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Utilize various repertoire representing many musical styles to increase students’ developmental and skill level.
Provide musical direction and serve on the production team for one Middle and one Upper School musical each year.
Attend and participate in professional meetings, including collaborative teams, division meetings, and professional development.
Initiate, implement, and coordinate programs with colleagues throughout the school.
Completes other tasks as deemed appropriate by the school administration.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the vocal music and choral instruction
Proficient in reading music
Proficient piano skills and/or collaborative piano
Skilled choral director
Secure knowledge of best practices in music instruction, and the ability to utilize a variety of strategies for various grade levels
Ability to plan for and execute a multi-grade level concert
Strong classroom management skills with the ability and the desire to work with a diverse student population
Ability to work collaboratively with others and maintain positive professional relationships
Ability to read, comprehend, follow and give oral and written instructions
Excellent writing and communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills with a strong degree of self- direction and motivation
High level of maturity, confidentiality, and assertiveness
Capable of using tact and diplomacy in dealing with others
Capable of competently operating technology
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree or advanced degree in vocal music performance or choral music education preferred
WI DPI music licenses 510 (vocal music), or 511 (choral music) preferred
