Position Overview 

The Country Day School is currently seeking a full-time, 12-month Human Resources and Compliance Manager. The Human Resources and Compliance Manager reports to the Head of School and is a member of the school’s leadership team (administration). The Manager is primarily responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and evaluation of the Human Resources function including federal, state, and local compliance; policy and procedure development; full life-cycle recruitment; employee relations; substitute coordination, and student and employee records management in compliance with Virginia childcare licensing regulations.  

The Manager collaborates with the Head of School, Director of Finance, Director of Curriculum and Teacher Supervision, and other Senior Administrators to set school policies and procedures.  The Manager is expected to be familiar with the independent school industry best practices and maintain professional relationships with external partners. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

• Develops and maintains relationships with faculty and staff on all levels 

• Annually reviews and makes recommendations to Head of School for improvement of policies, procedures, and practices on personnel matters 

• Maintains knowledge of compliance and licensing regulations and implements required changes 

• Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures compliance. 

• Builds and maintains a strong relationship with the Virginia Childcare licensing inspector to facilitate inspections, campus visits, and ensure that compliance issues are addressed and resolved expediently 

• Oversees substitute teacher coordination to ensure staffing compliance daily. 

• Works with Director of Finance to update annual leave 

• Collects, organizes, and maintains student health records, emergency forms, and medical authorization forms in accordance with licensing regulations 

• Distributes, files and audits employee paperwork (background checks, health testing, central registry forms) as required by Virginia childcare licensing and coordinates the onboarding process for new hires 

• Manages the faculty contract renewal process together with the Director of Finance and Head of School 

• Conducts recruitment and selection activities, which include assisting with the preparation of position descriptions and hiring announcements, identifying and utilizing resources to obtain a diverse and representative applicant pool, screening candidates, and generating offer letters 

• Writes, edits and finalizes job descriptions as necessary 

• Manages and tracks worker’s compensation and unemployment claims 

• Supports the maintenance of the personnel handbook 

• Supports the Director of Finance with benefits administration 

• Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned 

• Investigates and pursues resolution of interpersonal conflicts and similar workplace problems 

Qualifications and Experience: 

• 3-5 years of direct human resources experience 
• PHR or SHRM-CP certification required 
• Bachelor’s degree required 

Preferred Experience: 

• Prior experience in education 
• Training in conflict resolution and/or mediation 
• Master's Degree
