SCHOOL/ORGANIZATION: St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, is a completely residential, co-educational secondary school affiliated with the Episcopal Church and welcoming to people of all faiths. St. Paul’s School seeks innovative, experienced educators who are eager to participate in the academic, athletic, and co-curricular life of this dynamic residential community in our dedication to the pursuit of excellence in character and scholarship for our students.
In the 1850’s, the founder of St. Paul’s School, Dr. George Shattuck, deeply believed that children were best educated by being deeply immersed in the beauty, spirit, and experience of the natural world. Almost 170 years later, we want to integrate an understanding of ecology and natural systems into the “new basics” of a St. Paul’s education. Bringing Dr. Shattuck’s vision forward, we want students out on the water, the trails, and the climbing opportunities, away from phones and screens and focusing on physical activity, teamwork and collaboration, leadership and fun. The Director of Outdoor Education and Programming will reinforce what we are doing in the chapel and classrooms, in terms of experiential education and community life/teambuilding/leadership, by developing and implementing a robust and fun outdoor education/experiential education program.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Outdoor Education and Programming will work closely with the Director of Athletics to develop and implement an outdoor education and expedition program. The Director of Outdoor Education will partner with the Vice Rector for School Life to explore ways in which outdoor programs can be used in support of leadership development. In addition to leading the Outdoor Education program, the candidate will teach in one of our academic departments and be responsible for a variety of activities typical to the boarding school environment, including advising, dormitory association, at least two seasons of co-curricular engagement, committee work and other duties.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Creating a co-curricular program that builds technical skills for our students (camping, orienteering, hiking, canoeing) and manage the equipment and risks associated with this program;
Working with the Director of Athletics, develop afternoon activities for students that expand upon our current offerings;
Working with our Environmental Steward and joining the Environmental Education Working Group, connect our academic curriculum to outdoor education and work with teachers to extend their classroom to the outdoors;
Support all students’ understanding of the connection between the beauty of their Millville home and sustainability/ethical citizenship;
Lead outdoor/experiential education travel annually
