Fredericksburg Academy is seeking an experienced, dedicated, and compassionate Director of College Counseling to guide our students and families through the college exploration and application process. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of college admissions, application procedures, standardized testing requirements, and the ability to support students in identifying the best-fit colleges based on their academic, personal, and career aspirations. This role is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students’ futures by helping them navigate the complexities of college admissions and guiding them toward institutions that best support their aspirations. Fredericksburg Academy’s typical graduating classes range in size from 32-36 students. The Director of College Counseling has the support of the Registrar to assist with collecting, updating, and uploading documents and the support of the Head of Upper School to review recommendations.
Responsibilities
College Exploration and Fit Assessment
- Work closely with students to understand their strengths, interests, and goals to identify a range of colleges that align with their academic and personal aspirations.
- Advise families on different college types, majors, career paths, and financial considerations to support well-informed decision-making.

Application Process Guidance
- Lead each member of the graduating class through the college application process, including developing application timelines and ensuring they meet deadlines for applications, essays, recommendations, and financial aid submissions.
- Provide individualized feedback on college essays, personal statements, and resumes to strengthen each student’s application.
- Write individual Counselor Recommendations for each member of the graduating class.
Testing and Academic Advising
- Counsel students on required standardized tests and provide guidance on preparation, registration, and scheduling.
- Offer advice on academic course selections, extracurricular activities, and leadership opportunities that align with college aspirations.
Workshops and Presentations
- Plan and conduct informational workshops for students, families, and faculty on college admissions trends, financial aid options, and college readiness.
- Arrange for college representative visits, alumni talks, and other events to expose students to a variety of post-secondary options.
Resource Coordination and Relationship Building
- Build and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives to stay informed about program changes and admissions expectations.
- Keep current on trends in college admissions, financial aid policies, and testing requirements, and share insights with students and families.
Support and Advocacy
- Advocate for each student by working closely with faculty, administrators, and parents to support their overall academic and social-emotional needs throughout the college admissions process.
- Address any questions, concerns, or challenges students and families may have, providing timely and helpful resources or referrals.
Other duties assigned as necessary
Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
Experience as a college counselor, admissions officer, or in a similar role.
In-depth knowledge of college admissions processes, financial aid, and standardized testing requirements.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work with a diverse student population and navigate sensitive family dynamics.
