The Position: What Will You Do & How Will We Collaborate?
The Middle School Dean of Student Life, a full-time leadership position, is a member of the Middle School Leadership Team and reports to the Head of Middle School. This position operates on a 12 month contract. The Middle School Dean of Student Life works closely with both the Head of Middle School and the four Grade Level Team Leads on all aspects of student life including student activities/trips, discipline and student culture and climate. In that capacity, they have broad responsibility for four core domains:
Honing and evolving the school’s philosophical approach to behavior and discipline and our practical implementation of that approach.
Supporting Administration, Advisors, Grade-Level Team Leads, Reach Beyond Block teams in all aspects of student life beyond the academic schedule such as clubs, field trips, outdoor ed, Reach Beyond Week, school events, recess duties, impact leadership, promotion/8th grade year end celebrations, alumni relations, after school student life and student council.
Proactively fostering a positive school culture in the middle school, grounded in our core values: Be Kind, Be Curious, Take Risks, and Be Your Best.
Creating consistency and cohesion in challenging our middle school students to grow their agency, wellness and social impact as a community.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Actively participate in a collaborative employee culture that is committed to being at the leading edge of JK - 12th grade education.
Meet weekly with Grade-Level Team Leads, grade level teams, Student Support team, STUCO leadership and Head of Middle School
Meet with Grade-level teaching and advising teams as necessary to discuss student concerns and MS planning for events, assemblies and potential speakers
Plan and execute Outdoor Education in partnership with Grade level Team Leads and Head of MS
Develop and implement systems that are developmentally appropriate, student growth-oriented, school values-aligned, and complementary to Developmental Designs classroom practices for responding to behavior and disciplinary concerns, including:
Logical student consequences for infractions
Structures to encourage student growth and learning from mistakes
Parent communication from start to finish
Documentation and follow-up from and for faculty
Work with all faculty, especially advisors and the DEI+JA team, to support consistent and equitable implementation of student structures
Support advisors and Grade-Level Team Leads in being a “first responder” to disciplinary infractions
Support advisors and Grade-Level Team Leads in communicating with and meeting with families about serious or persistent behavioral concerns
Stay abreast of best practices regarding student culture, discipline, and behavior and share such learning with senior leaders and faculty
Develop vision for, and work with faculty to implement, initiatives to further cultivate a positive school climate and healthy student culture
Coordinate teacher duties, parent conferences, office hours, club time, calendaring, dances, on and off campus events
Coach faculty in classroom management and student facing responsibility
Serve as thought partner and co-planner with Middle School faculty and Middle School Leadership Team on programming and structures that would contribute positively to student life
Candidates w/ after school coaching/mentoring experience (athletics, Robotics, theater, etc) encouraged
Report to Head of Middle School
Qualifications
Desire and ability to work in a collegial, highly collaborative environment
Demonstrated commitment to teaching and learning in a diverse, dynamic, and progressive school community
Experience in counseling and/or restorative justice processes is preferred
A commitment to anti-racism and demonstrated skill designing equitable and inclusive educational experiences and learning environments that incorporate themes of diversity and justice
Bachelor’s degree in Education is preferred/required
