Position Available: Blair announces an opening for an English/Theaterteacher for the 2025-2026 school year. Ideal candidates will have a strong academic background in English and theater, capable of assisting with classical through contemporary plays and musicals. In addition, they will have a student-centered teaching philosophy, experience in student-centered pedagogies, including creating and scaffolding curriculum, and guiding students through character development and artistic decision-making. Candidates must enjoy working with adolescents and possess an exceptional work ethic, strong communication skills, the ability to manage multiple and varied responsibilities, and a commitment to productive collaboration with colleagues in both the English and performing arts departments.
In particular, the person in this role will:
Be a passionate performer, as well as a consumer and student of fiction, non-fiction and theatrical literature;
Possess a strong command of the tools of good writing, specifically grammar, mechanics and vocabulary;
Balance an inclination for literature, writing and theater with investment in evidence-based teaching strategies;
Have earned a BA in English or in Theater and/or an advanced degree in those subjects;
Help students refine their questioning, critical reading, writing and class discussion skills;
Possess a strong command of the physical and vocal tools of good acting and character development;
Support departmental and cross-departmental initiatives, including, but not limited to, three theatrical productions, all-school read, student performance series and collaboration for Blair On Stage for Family Weekend; and
Actively contribute to departmental efforts to support the continually evolving English and theater curriculum in the years ahead.
Typical job responsibilities include:
Teaching four sections (with two preparations) each semester;
Coaching or assisting with a sport for two seasons or activities for three seasons;
Advising a group of six students; and
Providing weekly supervision for boarding students during evening and weekend hours.
