Overview
The Kew-Forest School, a preschool through 12th grade co-educational day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hills, NY, seeks an experienced Middle & Upper School Spanish teacher. Kew-Forest is proud to enroll an astonishingly diverse student body, with approximately nine percent being international students. Committed to promoting diversity in its hiring process, Kew-Forest strives to build an inclusive community and a culturally diverse faculty to support its students and families. Middle and Upper School students study Spanish as part of their required language coursework. The Middle & Upper School Spanish teacher will primarily work with Middle School students, though heritage speakers in Middle School may join Upper School classes. The Middle & Upper School encompasses grades 6-12 and our faculty must have expertise in student and curricular development across these grades. Preference will be given to candidates with strong leadership skills and experience teaching both Middle and Upper School Spanish.
The Kew-Forest School is embarking on an exciting new chapter as it celebrates its 108th year of operation. The School is in the process of becoming an authorized International Baccalaureate school for the Primary and Middle Years Programs (PYP & MYP). This transition will enrich our students’ educational experience, and offer incredible growth, leadership, and professional development opportunities for our faculty.
The ideal candidate for this position will be energetic, creative, imaginative, and thoughtful in their approach to curriculum and pedagogy, and will play a pivotal role in revamping our Middle School Spanish program to align with the IB MYP framework as the School enters a dynamic era of Kew-Forest 2.0.
The ideal candidate will have or be...
A Bachelor’s degree or higher with an emphasis in Spanish;
Experience teaching standard Middle & Upper School Spanish;
Familiarity with and enthusiasm for designing curricula aligned with the IB MYP preferred;
Native or near-native fluency in Spanish;
A strong understanding of and commitment to cultural competency and supporting a diverse student population through teaching inclusive Spanish curricula;
A dynamic and flexible instructor capable of reaching, teaching, and differentiating instruction for a range of learners;
Passionate about designing courses and learning experiences that engage students in project-based and inquiry-based learning through presentations, research, projects, and hands-on activities;
Committed to mentoring and supporting student learning outside of the classroom;
Dedicated to professional development and lifelong learning, and actively engaged in the field of Spanish and language education;
Knowledgeable about current trends in language education;
Experienced in using ACTFL’s models, levels, and approaches to teaching Spanish;
Able to develop hands-on field trips around Long Island and the New York City boroughs;
Skilled in written and oral communication, to effectively engage with students, parents, and colleagues;
Collaborative and eager to work with other language teachers.
