Overview
The Kew-Forest School, a preschool through 12th grade co-educational day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hills, NY, seeks an experienced Middle & Upper School Mathematics teacher. Kew-Forest is proud to enroll an astonishingly diverse student body, with approximately nine percent being international students. Committed to promoting diversity in its hiring process, Kew-Forest strives to build an inclusive community and a culturally diverse faculty to support its students and families. Middle School students take two years of Pre-Algebra in Grades 6 and 7, followed by Algebra 1 in Grade 8. All Upper School students are required to complete three years of mathematics. The Middle & Upper School Mathematics teacher will typically teach Grade 7 Pre-Algebra, Grade 9 Geometry, and Grade 11 Pre-Calculus. The Middle & Upper School encompasses Grades 6-12, requiring faculty to be knowledgeable about student and curricular development across these grades. Preference will be given to candidates with strong leadership skills and demonstrated experience teaching Mathematics at both Middle and Upper School levels.
The Kew-Forest School is embarking on an exciting new chapter as it enters its 108th year of operation. The School is in the process of creating a campus master plan which will entail examining and making improvements to its current facilities, enhancing our students’ experience, and providing incredible growth, leadership, and professional development opportunities for our faculty. The Kew-Forest School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP). The individual who fills this position must be energetic, creative, imaginative, and thoughtful in their approach to curriculum and pedagogy, and will contribute substantially to the revamping of our Middle & Upper School Mathematics program as the School enters its era of Kew-Forest 2.0.
The ideal candidate will have or be...
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher with an emphasis in Mathematics;
- Experience teaching both Middle and Upper School Mathematics, including standard and honors;
- Familiarity with and enthusiasm for designing curricula aligned with the IB MYP preferred;
- An understanding of and commitment to cultural competency and how to support a diverse student population, particularly through teaching inclusive mathematics curricula;
- A dynamic and flexible instructor who can reach, teach, and differentiate instruction for a range of learners;
- Invested in designing courses and learning experiences that engage students in project-based learning and inquiry-based practices through the use of data analysis, projects, and hands-on activities;
- A passion for mentoring ongoing student learning outside of the classroom;
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development and lifelong learning, and be active as an educational professional in the field of Mathematics;
- A deep understanding of current trends in mathematics education;
- Well-versed in best practices for Mathematics teaching and learning;
- Familiar with digital resources, digital textbooks, and technology in the classroom;
- Ability to develop hands-on field trips around Long Island and the New York City boroughs;
- Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate with students, parents, and colleagues;
- A collaborative instinct to facilitate working with Mathematics teachers.
Salary Range
$60,000 - $110,000 per annum, commensurate with years of experience.
