Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in north Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for an Upper School English Teacher to teach four sections of Upper School English. This position would start with opening meetings in August, 2025. Applications will be reviewed starting in January, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
Responsibilities Specific responsibilities for this position include:
Teach four sections of classes in some combination of different grade levels. Courses emphasize the study of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, as well as the craft of writing in different modes. Classes study, discuss, and write about literary works as expressions of various cultural, sociopolitical, and historical contexts. Class sizes are capped at 18 students, and most classes approach or reach that limit.
Work with a diverse student body who come to school with different and evolving lived experiences and levels of preparation. This work includes providing academic support for students with a variety of learning styles and strengths outside of class time (answering questions, one-on-one work, etc.) as well as employing anti-racist pedagogical strategies to achieve equitable support and outcomes for all students.
Collaborate and participate in the work of the English Department to develop innovative, equitable, and inclusive curricula, pedagogy, and assessment strategies.
Attend department, grade-level English team, and faculty meetings as scheduled.
Advise a group of between 8 and 10 Upper School students.
Write evaluations of students at each marking period.
Participate in the life of the school community, including in distributed leadership roles, such as chaperoning duties or supervising a student club or activity within the school day
Requirements and Qualifications
The successful applicant will have at least a BA in English or a related field.
Experience teaching at a high-school level or working with diverse high-school aged students in some other capacity. Those whose teaching has focused on early-college or middle-school years are also encouraged to apply.
Experience teaching or academic preparation in texts from a variety of countries around the world and purposeful integration of diverse perspectives and identities (such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.) into curriculum and class activities.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate difficult conversations about identity, privilege, systems of power, and how those systems of power affect us.
Creation of an inclusive learning environment where all students feel seen, valued and heard.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete three criminal background checks.

Salary and Benefits Salary Range:$67,842 - $135,674 based upon experience and education.
