Porter-Gaud is an Episcopal, coeducational day school serving more than 1,000 students in grades 1-12. The O'Quinn Schools of Porter-Gaud serve an additional 600 preschool students from age two through kindergarten. Porter-Gaud is seeking a Middle School Latin Teacher who will be responsible for Latin instruction in grades 5 through 8 based upon the curriculum prescribed by the World Languages Department. An ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in Latin and in Classical cultures, instilling an appreciation and enthusiasm for Latin scholarship. Contingent upon student enrollment, the teacher will have up to five Latin classes at a variety of levels and student abilities. Faculty are also expected to commit both to the enrichment of students and to the greater Porter-Gaud community.
Primary Responsibilities:
Teach up to five sections of Latin, in congruence with curriculum requirements and objectives, making effective use of technology, textbooks, and other instructional materials as appropriate.
Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence is honored and respectful interactions between and among students are valued.
Work with students to develop a love of learning, a sense of academic integrity, and a thoughtful work ethic.
Inspire a love of, and appreciation for, languages and diverse cultures.
Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments which accommodate multiple learning styles.
Maintain flexibility and fluidity with technology to incorporate Zoom/Google Meet, 1:1 iPad program, use of Apple TV, etc.
Participate as an active team member within the World Languages Department, including the Middle and Middle School divisions, and the school community as a whole.
Serve as advisor to Middle School students.
Sponsor the Latin Club.
Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A major or minor in Latin or Classical studies is preferred.The School highly values advanced degrees, such as Master's and Doctorates, and considers them not only in determining compensation but also when selecting and prioritizing candidates.
A thorough knowledge of Latin vocabulary and syntax.
Expertise in teaching methodologies and assessment techniques for Middle School students.
Expertise with the use of technology in the classroom.
Experience teaching Latin at the middle and/or Middle School level is strongly preferred.
Willingness to support the school's diversity and inclusion efforts.

Reporting: The Latin Teacher will report directly to the Head of Middle School and take direction from the World Language Department Chair.
