Dalton’s Middle School is seeking a full-time 4th and 5th Grade Math Specialist to start in September 2025. The Math Specialist will work with students in 4th and 5th grades to support their learning in and outside the math classroom. They will co-teach two sections of 4th or 5th grade Math and provide support to students in other classrooms across the 4th and 5th grades. Working with students to foster confidence and enthusiasm in their study of mathematical concepts, along with supporting them to develop fluency with rational number operations and pre-algebra topics is central to this role.
The Math Specialist is part of the MS Math Department (4th -8th grades) and is responsible for supporting effective mathematics instruction in collaboration with the classroom teacher. They are also responsible for working with students who need intervention support services or enrichment outside of class in the 4th & 5th grades. They will collaborate closely with the 6th-8th Grade Math Specialist and the 6th Grade Math team to support the transition from 5th to 6th grade.
Responsibilities:
Co-teach 4th or 5th grade Math
Co-plan 4th & 5th grade with other Math Teachers
Collaborate with the MS Math teachers on differentiated teaching strategies to support a range of learners.
Identify learning styles and recommend appropriate strategies for the teacher and student to implement, including ensuring that accommodations are met.
Think creatively and flexibly on best structures to support student learning (based on data as well).
Work individually or in small groups with students in 4th & 5th grades (who are identified by teachers and administrators) both in class and during multiple Lab periods a week.
Communicate information regarding progress in math through rotational meetings with House Advisors
Attend case conferences and guidance meetings as needed
Complete checklist reports
Facilitate communication between tutors and teachers to coordinate the support program
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in education or a related field. Special Education Degree preferred
Experience with upper elementary math (3rd-6th grades)
Prior experience in working with Upper Elementary and Middle School students with learning differences
Places value in using an asset based, whole child approach to supporting students
Exceptional written and oral communication skills
Strong skills in data gathering, organizing, analysis and follow through, developing differentiated plans and implementing next steps
Effective interpersonal skills and proven success working collaboratively
A reflective practitioner who possesses a willingness to grow professionally
Ability to manage, take initiative on, prioritize and follow through
