Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan.The Upper School, located in the Bronx, is comprised of approximately 600 students and 80 faculty members.

Position Summary
ECFS seeks to hire a Sculpture Teacher for grades 7-12 that can teach a variety of sculpture and other visual arts survey classes. The candidate will implement a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for the range of ages, skills, and experience levels for middle school through high school students. The candidate should have a passion for working with young people of this age range in a school with a diverse student body in a values-based community. The candidate should demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside of the classroom.
This is a .60 FTE position with a hiring range of $43,841-$106,503.
Please note that this is an onsite role and not performed remotely. Ethical Culture Fieldston School retains its right to modify job duties in accordance with changing operational needs.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of the Sculpture Teacher will include:
- Teaching approximately two-thirds course load primarily in Sculpture and Visual Arts Survey to students in Grades 7-12.
- Having extensive experience in teaching and working with a variety of three-dimensional media that might include wood, plaster, moldmaking and casting, fibers, and installation;
- Appropriately addressing student behavioral issues and other challenges that may arise in the classroom in order to maintain a safe environment and a sense of calm in such situations;
- Maintaining accurate student record keeping including grades and attendance;
- Providing encouragement to students to help support their social and emotional growth;
- Maintaining the studio space and keeping track of materials and supplies accordingly;
- Ensuring confidentiality of student information as necessary;
- Attending all departmental, divisional, and school-wide meetings;
- The ability to apply a variety of pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of the various student;
- Having a collaborative approach with other colleagues, including sharing resources and communicating about curriculum and students;
- Performing other related projects, tasks or duties as needed and assigned.
Position requirements
The successful incumbent will possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in studio art with a concentration in sculpture, or equivalent. Masters preferred. Personal studio practice a plus;
- Prior successful experience teaching Middle and High School students;
- A passion for teaching with a pleasant and positive demeanor toward all forms of teaching and learning;
- The ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with faculty, administrators, students, parents, and the overall community;
- An understanding and commitment to cultural competency and how to support a diverse student population;
- Outstanding organization skills and ability to manage time effectively and prioritize required tasks;
- Excellent verbal, written and verbal communication skills;
- A positive attitude and the ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback;
- A commitment to engaging in ongoing professional development and proficiency in utilizing and learning new technologies (i.e., Google Workspace tools);
- Reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance; and
- A deep respect and appreciation for diversity in all of its forms.
