The College Counselor guides students through the college admissions process with expertise, empathy, and personalized support. This role fosters a student-centered community, empowering adolescents to approach their futures with confidence, purpose, and a strong sense of belonging. The successful candidate will apply a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion to all aspects of the college counseling process, ensuring an equitable and supportive experience for every student.

This  full-time position reports directly to the Director of College Counseling. The College Counselor will actively engage in other areas of the residential experience based on interest and experience; this may include Community Life duties (evening dorm supervision/ weekend duty), serving as an advisor, coach and participating in the Four Point program.

Key Responsibilities 

College Counseling

• Manage a caseload of 25–35 students per class, guiding them through the college search, application, and decision-making process while maintaining detailed records of progress, applications, and matriculations.
• Assist students in creating tailored college lists, providing feedback on essays, personal statements, and applications.
• Write personalized letters of recommendation highlighting students’ strengths and achievements.
• Foster a supportive environment for students and families by providing resources, programming, and guidance through the college admissions and financial aid process, including navigation of the SCOIR college planning platform.
• Provide academic advising and support course selection for rising sophomores and juniors to align with college aspirations.
• Oversee initiatives such as athletic recruiting, Career Conversations, and related career programming.
• Travel to colleges and conferences for professional development and to represent the school.

Administrative and Additional Responsibilities

• Utilize SCOIR to streamline communication, manage data, and track student outcomes. 
• Keep records of correspondence with parents and utilize school databases appropriately to communicate student issues.
• Participate in Community Life duties, based on interest, experience, and organizational need.

Advisor Role (if applicable)

• Serve as the communications link between the student, teachers, coaches, and family.
• Maintain a sound understanding of adolescent development
• Meet with advisees during the scheduled advisory block
• Support the advisory curriculum
• Provide guidance on course selection, academics, community life and discipline
• Communicate with advising team leaders on a weekly basis

Community Life Role (as assigned)

•  Help supervise students in an academic or residential space up to one evening a week
• Participate in a weekend duty team
• Engage in community activities
• Communicate and seek to reduce scheduling conflicts

Professionalism

• Attendance and participation in team and community meetings, special events, school functions, and Four Point program
• Maintenance of prompt and frequent communication with advisors and employees
• Pursue annual professional development
• Meet general daily professional standards regarding attendance, timeliness, and deadlines
• Support the mission and philosophy of Gould acting as a positive contributor to the school community, actively participating in the life of the school as a role model of appropriate behavior with students, parents, colleagues, and other members of the school community, and enforcing school rules
• Adherence to policies in the Employee Handbook and Community Guide

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, required
• Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant experience in college counseling and/or college admissions.
• Familiarity with a wide range of colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, as well as financial aid processes, with a commitment to ongoing learning in these areas.
• Excellent interpersonal and counseling skills, and the ability to work effectively with both young people and adults.
• Outstanding communication (oral and written) abilities and organizational skills.
• The capacity to take initiative, work independently, think critically, and solve problems with a team mindset. 
• Ability to organize events, manage deadlines, and provide clear communication to multiple stakeholders. 
• Proficiency with technology, including Google Workspace and SCOIR.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and ensure accurate records of student progress, applications, and matriculations.
• Valid passport and US driver’s license 
• Pass a criminal and sexual offender background check
• Obtain CHRC certification from the Maine Department of Education
