Position: Assistant Girls’ Rowing Coach
Location: Newton Country Day School Boathouse
Charles River (just upstream of CRI)/ Nonantum Rd, Newton, MA 02458
Season: Spring 2025 (March–May)
Schedule:
Weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (4:00–6:15 PM); Wednesday, Friday (3:00–5:15 PM) ? Weekends: Practices and races as scheduled
Compensation: Range $4,000-5,000, commensurate with experience
Position Summary
Newton Country Day School seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated Girls' Crew Assistant Coach for the spring 2025 season. The ideal candidate will introduce and develop rowers’ technical skills, foster a love for the sport, and promote teamwork and discipline in a positive, supportive environment. This position provides an exciting opportunity to mentor young athletes and contribute to a growing and competitive rowing program on the Charles River.
Position Requirements
Experience: Rowing or coxing experience required (collegiate level preferred).
Coaching Skills: Prior coaching experience on scholastic, club, or collegiate levels; enthusiasm for working with young women; and a willingness to work with rowers.
Skills and Attributes:
? Ability to teach fundamental rowing techniques and water safety.
? Strong communication and organizational skills.
? Ability to motivate and engage athletes with varying skill levels.
? Commitment to fostering teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.
? Understanding of and respect for the mission of Sacred Heart education.
Certifications (Preferred): First Aid/CPR, SafeSport Certification, and USRowing membership (can be completed prior to the start of the season).
Key Duties
Athlete Development and Coaching
? Teach and reinforce basic rowing fundamentals, including proper technique, form, and boat safety.
? Develop rowers’ skills through structured practices, drills, and on-water coaching. ? Foster a positive and supportive environment that emphasizes personal improvement, teamwork, and respect.
? Evaluate athlete progress and provide constructive feedback.
Practice and Race Management
? Plan and lead daily practices on the Charles River, in line with the Head Coach’s program philosophy, and ensure sessions are engaging, organized, and safe. ? Assist in race preparation, including pre-race logistics.
? Travel with the team to weekend practices and regattas, supporting all facets of race-day execution.
Safety and Equipment Oversight
? Ensure the safety of all athletes by adhering to proper water safety protocols and monitoring weather conditions.
? Assist with the care and handling of boats, oars, and related equipment, ensuring proper maintenance and reporting any issues promptly.
? Willingness and ability to drive school vehicles for practices and competitions. ? Successful approval of required CORI background checks and fingerprinting. 4. Program Leadership and Communication
? Act as a mentor to rowers, building their confidence and enthusiasm for the sport. ? Communicate regularly with the Director of Athletics, athletes, and coaches regarding information related to the team.
? Promote a culture of sportsmanship, hard work, and school pride.
Support the Head Coach with other duties as needed to provide continuity of one program.
