Position Title: Sixth Grade Elementary Teacher - Leave Replacement
Reports to: Assistant Head of School
Status:Carlthorp School seeks to hire a dynamic sixth-grade teacher to join our faculty as a parental leave replacement from March - June 2025. The position is Full-time, Non-Exempt.

Established in 1939, Carlthorp School is the oldest independent coeducational day school for grades K-6 located in Santa Monica, California. Carlthorp School provides a strong academic foundation in a diverse and nurturing school community that emphasizes respectful values, responsible work habits, and excellence in order to prepare our students to achieve their highest potential in education and life. We are dedicated to supporting faculty growth and development through ongoing professional development and training. We have 280 students with two lead teachers per classroom of 20 students, and two classes per grade level.
Job Overview
The successful candidate must enjoy working with children and be devoted to building a nurturing and safe learning environment. To excel in this role, the Classroom Teacher must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as in-depth knowledge of classroom activities and teaching methods. The classroom teacher will be paired with a co-teacher in their homeroom classroom and will be responsible for sharing the teaching load in addition to running a reading and mathematics group.
Roles and Responsibilities
Design, plan and implement learning experiences for reading, writing, math, and social studies
Establish and maintain a healthy and trusting learning environment, fostering nurturing relationships with students
Meaningfully integrate technologies into class lessons, for online learning as well as in school learning
Guide students in their social-emotional development, maintaining expectations and support for positive and productive student behavior
Collaborate with the Director of Inclusion and Belonging to ensure that equity, representation, and diverse perspectives remain integral to curriculum development and instructional practices, fostering an inclusive learning environment that reflects and respects all identities.
Regularly communicate with families about classroom happenings and student progress
Update documentation of current curriculum, instruction, and assessment
Maintain records of individual student progress and achievement
Participate fully in ongoing professional development
Participate in the school community, including faculty and committee work, school duties, and activities such as clubs and assemblies
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Elementary Education preferred
Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level
Excellent knowledge of child development, latest education theories and practices, and current trends in education and professional development
Strong communication skills
Strong technology skills, familiarity with Google Classroom and other educational technology tools preferred
Skill in differentiating instruction
Demonstrated experience working in a culturally diverse community
