Position Summary
Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart seeks a passionate science educator for its Upper School, specializing in chemistry. This position requires a versatile instructor capable of teaching students in grades 9-12, with a commitment to supporting diverse learning needs and serving in a highly relational learning environment.
Position Requirements
Teach four sections of chemistry at levels ranging from standard-level chemistry to honors-level chemistry to AP Chemistry
Foster a deep appreciation for chemistry by creating an engaging and dynamic classroom environment that highlights the relevance of chemistry in everyday life
Cultivate skills in data analysis and interpretation, problem solving, and critical thinking
Mentor students in our Independent Research in Science and Engineering program
Provide individualized student support and accessible extra help
Design adaptive learning strategies for varied student abilities
Assess academic progress through personalized evaluation
Partner with colleagues to enrich science learning experiences and contribute actively to a team-based culture of collegiality
Collaborate in designing experiential and interdisciplinary learning opportunities to take learning beyond the confines of the science classroom
Exhibit a strong commitment to lifelong learning by engaging in professional development opportunities
Participate actively in the life of the wider school community by serving as an advisor for up to eight students, a moderator for a grade level, and a moderator for a co-curricular student activity; participating in weekly community time (announcements, chapel, class meeting); attending occasional evening and weekend events; and other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field required (advanced degree preferred)
Minimum of three years of high school chemistry teaching experience, including direct experience with AP Chemistry instruction
Strong understanding of the AP Chemistry curriculum and exam format
Pedagogical expertise in science education, with a strong emphasis on effective lab-based instruction
Competence in maintaining a safe lab environment through strict adherence to safety protocols
Experience in scientific research and a strong foundation in statistics are highly desirable
Exceptional capabilities in student engagement and support
Commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning approaches
Demonstrated ability to develop individualized learning strategies and flexibility in teaching methodology
Strong organizational and communication skills
Alignment with the Sacred Heart educational mission to educate the whole child
