City and Country School seeks Buildings and Grounds Carpenter/Handyperson for the 2024–2025 academic year, beginning in late February 2025.
The Buildings and Grounds Carpenter/Handyperson is skilled in carpentry, woodworking, and general maintenance tasks for the City and Country School buildings and surrounding property. This employee reports directly to the Buildings and Grounds Foreperson and, ultimately, to the Director of Facilities.
The individual in this role is an integral part of the Buildings and Grounds team and would carry out assignments necessary to construct and maintain structural woodworking machinery and equipment, along with the general maintenance work as described herein. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and is checked upon completion. The schedule is Tuesday through Friday, 12:00PM-8:00PM, and Saturday, 8:00AM-4:00PM.
The ideal candidate is insightful, visionary, analytical, detail-oriented, and mindful of the importance of building meaningful relationships with the school’s various community members. This is a bargaining unit position.
Responsibilities
Perform carpentry work involving woodworking, construction, and repairs on school buildings and property
Operate and maintain woodworking machinery, power tools and equipment
Construct and repair tables, benches, cabinets, counters, and other wood equipment and furnishing
Operate hand and power tools in a safe manner
Assists in other related building trades, such as cleaning, event setup/breakdown, plumbing, painting, and electrical work
Estimate and record costs and materials needed for various projects and have such materials on hand
Perform related work as required and as directed
Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to all safety protocols
Requirements
Proven knowledge of the practices and procedures involved in the carpentry and building trades, including general building maintenance, lighting, ballast replacement, minor electrical, plumbing, painting, and plastering
Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials and supplies used in the trade and in their application
Knowledge of the qualities and uses of various wood
Ability to build structures such as small sheds, planters, and wood blocks
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety devices and practices
Skilled at interpreting sketches or blueprints to execute tasks
Be capable of working independently and as part of a team
Ability to build positive, collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and community
Must be able to manage time effectively and handle multiple projects simultaneously
City and Country School is an independent, progressive school for children ages 2-13 in Greenwich Village. Children at City and Country develop responsibility and a strong sense of community through group experiences such as block building and work with other open-ended materials in the Lower School, and group jobs in the Middle and Upper School.
