The Assistant Head of Middle School is a fulltime twelve (12) month position. This role is a key member of the middle school leadership team and fosters a positive student experience, manages discipline and the honor code, monitors social and academic student progress, and communicates expectations that help students mature and become responsible, productive community members. First and foremost, this leader should intentionally cultivate character and community among the students. The Assistant Head of MS will teach up to two classes, coach a sport, be an advisor, and report directly to the Head of Middle School.
Essential Functions
The tasks, duties, and responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to:
Student Life
Foster a sense of community and belonging.
Partner with the MS Counselor to ensure smooth management of the advisory program, including creating the advisory groups.
Meet regularly with the student activities coordinator and Grade Level Chairs (GLCs) to discuss student events and clubs.
Monitor students' social, emotional, and academic progress to identify and address concerns.
Discipline
Promote and nurture a culture of relational discipline in which students are known and loved while held to high standards.
Uphold the school handbook policies with consistency, fairness, and a focus on restorative practices.
Monitor all detentions, clearly and punctually communicating with students and parents about when to serve detentions.
Respond to student crises with sensitivity, professionalism, and timeliness. Coordinate with MS Counselor and Grade Level Chairs as needed.
Partner with the Head of Middle School on discipline cases warranting a suspension or separation from school.
Maintain accurate records of disciplinary actions, student statements, interventions, and notes on student progress.
Attendance & Scheduling
Work directly with the MS Administrative Assistant daily to monitor attendance, tardiness, and early dismissals.
Track excessive absenteeism and communicate with parents and students about potential consequences.
Support the school registrar's efforts in course requests and scheduling.
Miscellaneous
Maintain high visibility throughout the school day and at athletic and artistic events after school.
Chaperone dances and school-sponsored social activities.
Work closely with the MS Counselor and be a resource for parents and students on social, emotional, and health-related issues.
Provide an example of faith, leadership, citizenship, and integrity for students and colleagues.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
Master's degree or higher
Independent school teaching and leadership experience
Skills, Abilities, and Attributes
Strong conflict management skills
Skilled at communicating with a variety of constituencies
Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills
Passion for working with middle school students
Strong desire to work in a faith-based community
Proficient in problem solving and decision making
Positive attitude and commitment to creating a joyful school experience
Physical Requirements
The physical requirements typically involve frequent walking, standing, sitting at a desk, occasional lifting of light items (up to 15 pounds), ability to navigate stairs and uneven terrain on a school campus, and the need to occasionally bend or stoop, with most work being performed in an office setting; essentially requiring good mobility and the ability to perform basic physical tasks throughout the day.
