The Speyer Legacy School seeks a dynamic, innovative, and passionate Afterschool Debate Team Coach for the 2025-2026 school year. The candidate hired will report to the Head of Middle School. They will be responsible for collaborating with other Debate teachers and coaches to support the school’s mission and Debate program’s curricular goals. The ideal candidate possesses a love of Middle School children, creative problem-solving skills, enthusiasm for leading and inspiring budding debaters, strong organizational skills, and strong interpersonal skills that allow one to cooperate and collaborate effectively with others.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide coaching for the Debate Team after school (3:30-4:45 PM) four days a week (Monday - Thursday).
Establish and implement rules for behavior and classroom procedures and routines to foster an inclusive and positive learning environment.
Prepare Debate teams to compete in local weekend tournaments.
Accompany students to local weekend tournaments, approximately once per month.
Organize the logistics of participating in tournaments, including communicating with the debate leagues, communicating with students and families, arranging for parent trainings and volunteer judging.
Communicate regularly with families about Debate Team happenings and provide information to families in advance of tournaments and regarding judge trainings and volunteer participation.
Collaborate to host a debate tournament at Speyer once per year.
Promote respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion as a core value of the School, a shared responsibility in partnership with the school community.
Engage respectfully with students and families and demonstrate sensitivity to cultures, values, configurations, and beliefs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of child development, best practices, and classroom management skills.
Knowledge of current trends in public speaking, debate education, and debate competitions.
Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Strong collaboration skills.
Skill in creating a learning environment that is challenging, motivating, and developmentally appropriate.
Qualifications
High School degree or equivalent.
Experience with Debate teams or public speaking forums.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States
Salary Range
The annual salary for this part-time position is $10,000.
