Debate Faculty, Upper School Begins August 2025 Part-time 75% FTE (with benefits)
Job Summary: Pembroke Hill School seeks a part-time upper school speech and debate teacher with experience competing in and coaching interpretation events, Public Forum debate, and/or policy debate. This role will work closely with the two upper school co-directors of speech and debate in the classroom and at tournaments to support the Pembroke Hill debate program.
The candidate should have a passion for interacting with primarily upper school as well as middle school students in and outside of the classroom and an ability to thrive in a collaborative work environment that values innovation and creativity. A sense of humor and a positive and ambitious attitude are highly desirable. Candidates must be able to use technology to enhance the classroom experience and to use a range of resources that represent diverse experiences, viewpoints, and a passion for teaching.
Key Responsibilities:
As a team of three, collaborate and coordinate with the US teaching partner to coach and teach in the upper school speech and debate program. Offer assistance and support to the middle school debate program with coaching at tournaments and collaborating to achieve consistency in the PHS program.
Serve as Assistant Debate coach for the upper and middle school speech and debate team.
Teach upper school speech and debate courses each semester.
Collaborate with the middle school speech and debate director to build a program supporting students transitioning from middle to upper school debate.
Assist with tournament scheduling, planning, transportation, and communication for upper school competitions.
Supervise and assist with approximately 20 upper or middle school tournament days throughout the competition season as well as state and national tournaments.
Communicate with students and families regarding debate tournaments and practices.
Schedule: Teaching positions are based on the school year (August through May). During the school year, there are three school vacations – one week at Thanksgiving, two weeks in December, and two weeks in March – plus holidays, personal and sick days. Must have the ability to work outside of school hours (evenings and weekends). Additional summer days may be required depending on tournament results. Additional days in summer would be eligible for additional compensation. Schedule is 75% of full time, classes meet daily (Monday through Friday).
Compensation: Compensation will be based on a competitive norm influenced by area and peer schools, using years of teaching experience and the highest completed degree. Transcripts and verification of employment will be required. Qualifications and Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
Prior middle and/or upper school teaching experience is preferable.
Strong technology skills, including emerging technologies and the use of technology to enhance the educational program required.
Proven ability to collaborate amongst teaching staff.
Proven ability to connect and engage with young learners.
