Position Purpose: The Lower School Physical Education Instructor is responsible for preparing curriculum, teaching physical education at the Lower School level, and creating a dynamic learning environment for students in the class.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Teaching Role
Be well versed in best practices in physical education, nutrition and social emotional learning
Plan and implement physical education lessons that have clear objectives and integrate skill-based instruction, games, nutrition, fitness, health & wellbeing, and social emotional learning
Implement small and whole group instruction
Demonstrate strong classroom management skills
Integrate diversity, equity and inclusion work into the programming
Assess and report on student learning, including ongoing assessments and report cards
Build strong partnerships with families and communicate regularly about student learning and classroom events through Seesaw and other forums
Utilize technology
Collaborate and communicate with classroom teachers to support the whole child
Participate in the planning, development and evaluation of curricula, materials and methodology on a regular basis
Maintain expertise in the field through ongoing professional development
Attend all faculty and grade level meetings.
Fulfill all SAIS requirements for continued employment. (As stated in the Country Day Employee Handbook)
Attend all required after school events as stated in the Lower School Handbook
Perform other duties as assigned
Coaching Role
Coach a Middle School, Junior Varsity, or Varsity team in at least two seasons and/or serve as the program head/head varsity coach for a single sport.
Supervise and instruct student-athletes during all team activities
Maintain inventory of team equipment and apparel
Regularly communicate with team parents and athletics program staff regarding team activities
Attend required team and interscholastic athletics program meetings
Support multi-sport participation for student-athletes
Promote balanced achievement in all areas of school life for student-athletes
Comply with all Charlotte Country Day School, Greater Charlotte Middle School Athletic Association, Charlotte Independent Schools Association, and North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association policies and procedures.
Program heads are additionally responsible for the management of their individual sport program at all levels, including: development of teaching curriculum; hiring, management, and evaluation of staff; development of competition schedules; and budget management.
Supervisory Role
Monitor children to provide for their safety at all times
Perform carpool duties as assigned for your particular role
Interact and respond to parents and faculty regarding phone calls and emails as appropriate
Prepare for daily instruction
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in subject matter
Experience teaching Physical Education at the Lower School level
Experience coaching an athletic team at the Middle School or Upper School level
Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work
Passion for children and an understanding of child development
Strong communication and time management skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Has extended times of standing, walking and performing sports and fitness related skills
Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment
Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
