The Gregory School has a 5th grade through 8th-grade curriculum that spirals through strands of American, World, Ancient History and Geography each year. In addition, 8th grade is taught Civics, incorporating American Government, foundations and types of Governments around the world.
The successful candidate will teach material from all the Strands of the Social Studies spectrum: world history, American history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture and society. The focus is on active learning, through discussion, hands on, experiential learning, group work, and learning the skills needed to think like a Historian. The curriculum and assessment models used at the Gregory School are based on current best practices in terms of the social sciences and child development.
The successful candidate is eager to join a community where professionalism and collaboration are valued. Teachers joining The Gregory School faculty are open to growth and participation in rich curricular conversations. Being part of The Gregory School community includes creating Friday exploration courses and interim week activities that extend learning beyond the classroom curriculum of the role.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Middle School team, prepare lessons in accordance with TGS Middle School History Curriculum.
Make use of many, varied formative assessment tools, including retrieval practice, to judge student progress towards a secure knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply.
Make effective use of Google Classroom and Powerschool for communication with students and parents in relation to assignments and grades.
Work as an effective team member as part of the Middle School Social Science Team.
Communicate with parents appropriately as needed.
Utilize effective classroom management skills.
Advise a group of 10-13 students.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a social sciences-related field
Prior experience teaching history, government geography or social studies in middle or upper grades
Teacher certification preferred
Ability to work well with people, especially adolescents
Strong communication and organizational skills
Strong knowledge of current events
Ability to embrace history from a multicultural, non bias, open minded perspective
